.Lyoko.Earth.

Lyoko
the background of Code Lyoko is a virtual reality-type world of unknown origin and purpose. the world of Lyoko is contained in its entirety within the Super Calculator that Jérémie and friends operate. there are four regions within Lyoko - forest, mountain, desert and glacier. which makes the population density 2 regions per inhabitant. that's right, the only two inhabitants who live in Lyoko (monsters not withstanding) are Aelita, Lyoko's protector, and X.A.N.A., Lyoko's destroyer. Jérémie and company access Lyoko through the Super Computer and a set of transportation devices called scanners. they only go to Lyoko when X.A.N.A. is causing trouble on earth through one of the many towers scattered throughout the four regions. at the end of season 1, it becomes possible not only for matter from earth to be virtualized into Lyoko, but for wholly virtual beings to be materialized to earth...

Earth
earth in Code: Lyoko is almost exactly the earth we know and love. the only changes are that Lakanal College was renamed Kadic College and it was moved north-northeast of its position on our earth. Kadic College, a secondary boarding school, is located in Boulogne-Billancourt, in west Paris. Jérémie, Odd and Ulrich live in the school's dorms, while Yumi lives with her parents, not far away. most of what doesn't take place in Lyoko happens here, at Kadic. the other main location on earth is the old Renault factory. located on Île Seguin, the abandoned automobile factory houses the Super Calculator, which in turn houses Lyoko. our heroes travel through the sewer system, which they've stocked with skateboards and razor scooter. the sewers take them from a manhole on Kadic's quad to the street in front of the Renault factory. sometimes the factory can be a dangerous place...

.Jérémie.Yumi.Ulrich.Odd.Sissi.Aelita.X.A.N.A..

Jérémie Belpois
Jérémie is 12 years old and in Quatrième, the equivalent of 8th grade. although he is accelerated by one year, his intellect, argues that he should be well out of high school by this point. simply put, Jérémie is a genius. Jérémie lives in a single room in Kadic College's dorms, where he has a massive computer operation going on. from his room, Jérémie can access the Super Calculator and communicate with Aelita on Lyoko, something he does at every given chance. it's no secret that Jérémie likes Aelita. he spends most of his free time (other than talking with Aelita) working on a program to materialize her to earth. what kind of couple would they make? unlike the others, nothing is known about Jérémie's family. Jérémie's always wearing a blue turtleneck and brown capris pants and rocking a pair of oval glasses. when X.A.N.A. brings the fight, Jérémie's job is to man the Super Computer and keep an eye on the proceedings on Lyoko. without Jérémie, how would the others be able to fight X.A.N.A.?

Yumi Ishiyama
let's examine Yumi's name. her family name, Ishiyama (), is comprised of two kanji. the first, "ishi," means "stone" and the second, "yama," means mountain. Yumi's first name is more complicated because there are more than one spellings for it. the first is . the first kanji by itself is "yumi" and means "bow," as in archery. the second kanji isn't seen by itself, but rather as "utsukushii" (), which means "beautiful." put them together, and the "-mi" from the first kanji drops off and the second kanji is read as "mi" instead of "utsukushii," thus forming "yumi." therefore, "yumi" as seen here, means "beautiful bow." the second is . in this case, the first character means "well" or "source." this would make the meaning "source of beauty." as to which one is used, i'm not sure.
Yumi is 14, the eldest of the group, and in Troisième, or 9th grade. unlike the others, Yumi lives at home with her parents and commutes to Kadic every day. perhaps Yumi's parents work for Nissan? anyway, Yumi is very mature and disciplined. outwardly, she is a stoic, but around the group, she's talkative and more outgoing. Yumi always dresses in black from head to toe. ever since the beginning, Yumi has had an unspoken, yet mutually understood relationship with Ulrich. very little ever happens between them, but Yumi gets a little jealous when Ulrich hangs out with Emily. Yumi is often the target of Sissi's assaults on account that Sissi has a crush on Ulrich. in Lyoko, Yumi is dressed as a geisha and wields a metal fan. she also has telekinetic powers. on the attack, Yumi throws her fan and it returns like a boomerang. is she using her telekinesis to do that? on the defensive, Yumi blocks enemy lasers with the fan. she has also used her telekinesis to make a shield out of rocks. Yumi and Aelita get along and work together pretty well. i wonder if they have girl talk when none of the boys are around?

Ulrich Stern
Ulrich is a 13-year-old and with Jérémie and Odd in Quatrième at Kadic College. he rooms with Odd in the dorms, which, like most dorm situations, leads to some tension sometimes. that's only normal, so don't worry about it. Odd and Ulrich are very good friends and they can often be found together outside of their dorm room. but it's really Yumi on whom Ulrich most often focuses his attention. there's really something between Ulrich and Yumi, although it is often stifled. the ambiguity of their relationship sometimes eats away at Ulrich and he feels like he needs a solid answer as to what they are. not only that, but Ulrich is also admired by Sissi, among others, which causes even more trouble. Ulrich is a serious person and a very hard worker. he excels at football (soccer), which is one of his favorite pastimes. perhaps the reason Ulrich is so serious is that his parents have extraordinarily high expectations of him, especially his father. between his parents, his relationship with Yumi and having to constantly fight off X.A.N.A., Ulrich is under constant stress and it affects his grades. it also appears that he usually has bags under his eyes. when he is called to Lyoko, Ulrich becomes a samurai. his digital sword is useful for both attack and defense. aside from the usual stabbing, it can deflect incoming lasers. Ulrich has also been endowed with the power to replicate himself twice. he often uses this to confuse the enemy and get a clean attack off. both in and out of Lyoko, Ulrich is often the center of attention and can be considered the field commander.

Odd della Robbia
Odd, who shares Ulrich's age and year in school, as well as his dorm room, is by far the most carefree of the group. Odd is always happy. he doesn't follow convention and sometimes has little regard for rules set by others. specifically, he keeps his little dog, Kiwi, in the dorm with him. Odd is an animal lover. this is not just evident by his living on the edge for Kiwi, but also because he emulates a cat while on Lyoko. Odd's family is a mystery. Ulrich once mentions that Odd is going to see his parents on the other side of the world. where is Odd from? was he meeting his parents for a vacation or was he going home to visit them? who knows! Odd's purple wardrobe and high voice have lead many to the initial impression that he was a girl. at no point is it less true than when we meet Samantha... when X.A.N.A. calls collect, Odd is usually the first to respond. in that regard, he could be considered Aelita's first line of defense. Odd's weapons are a complement of ten Laser Arrows. by having a projectile weapon like that, Odd is able to strike from a distance, but left defenseless. in his favor, though, Odd has incredible reflexes. he tends to show them off while fighting X.A.N.A.'s monsters. on top of the reflexes, Odd is also clairvoyant. he can catch a glimpse of the immediate future and know what to expect. even though he acts carefree in Lyoko, Odd knows it's serious and gets the job done.

Elisabeth "Sissi" Delmas
Sissi is the principal of Kadic College's daughter. she is 14 and also in Quatrième. most notably, Sissi likes Ulrich. she tries harebrained schemes to get him to notice her time and again, but without the desired results. Sissi acts very haughtily and people dislike her for that. she really is a brat, but there's more to it. Sissi just wants to be friends with Jérémie, Ulrich, Odd and Yumi. well, maybe not Yumi. while in reality, she wants to be friends with them, Sissi really does not like Yumi and that's because Yumi and Ulrich like each other. because her two goals conflict, Sissi probably won't be able to achieve either of them. it would seem like a logical conclusion that she should just talk to them and explain herself rather than trying to butt in all the time, but this solution just won't do it for Sissi. that's a shame, because she would probably be welcomed into the group if she only had a level head.

Aelita
Aelita represents all that is good in Lyoko. she is part of the Lyoko/X.A.N.A./Super Calculator program and entirely virtual. like X.A.N.A., Aelita is mostly a mystery. origin, age, etc. all unknown. Aelita has no real weaponry, but she has the ability to control her environment. when in trouble, she can use this skill to create a defensive barrier or little hideout. Aelita's real power is her ability to deactivate towers, thus she is indispensable in the battle against X.A.N.A. Aelita spends her downtime just hanging around or talking with Jérémie, who has fallen for her. in her own electronic way, and later in real life, Aelita likes Jérémie, too. in terms of knowledge, Aelita is incredibly intelligent. despite that, she is innocent. everything on earth is new to her. it will be interesting to see how she copes with life on earth in season 2!

X.A.N.A.
X.A.N.A., the mysterious program. who made it? why was it made? where did the money to fund such an undertaking come from? what is X.A.N.A.'s relationship to Lyoko and Aelita? what is X.A.N.A. trying to accomplish by attacking Lyoko and earth? as far as anyone knows, no one knows. X.A.N.A. resides in the Super Calculator located in the abandoned Renault factory on Île Seguin. from there, it activates towers on Lyoko and creates havoc on earth. will Jérémie and crew ever be able to free Lyoko and Aelita from it's tyrannical grip?

about Code Lyoko
note: this is in no way complete. accuracy may be in question as well
Code Lyoko started out life as an idea known in the halls of Antefilms as "Garage Kids." the premise of Garage Kids is mainly the same as that of Code Lyoko. Antefilms produced a 5-minute trailer for Garage Kids, which is available for download on their website. somewhere along the line, France 3 got involved and Garage Kids was given the green light to be produced as "Code: LYOKO." Code Lyoko debuted on France 3 in 2003. Cartoon Network acquired the rights to the show and it began airing as part of their Miguzzi lineup, weekdays at 5:30pm and Sundays at 3:30pm.
currently, the first four episodes are available in France on one DVD or VHS tape. the second will be released on August 25th in France. as of yet, there are no plans to release the DVDs in North America.
the second season is being worked on in France.
