Olmi's adaptation of Joseph Roth's novella is faithful and charming, filmed with a simplicity that mirrors the original's economy. As the alcoholic, though a tad too clean, Rutger Hauer effortlessly suggests the character's blend of pride, dignity and vunerability, while Olmi eschews prosaic realism in his evocation of Paris, seen as an oddly timeless, universal city; the lyricism matches the almost magical coincidences of the plot. Indeed the film has the resonance and innocence of a parable, its religious elements widely subordinated to a story that is told with a minimum of fuss and explanatory dialogue. Quite why the film is so affecting is hard to pin down: maybe it's because Olmi is so sure of his gentle, generous touch that he feels no need for overstatement. Timeout
Olmi returned to form with this gentle film that confirmed he had lost none of his story-telling skill or his marvellous understanding of human frailty. This adaptation of Joseph Roth's novella was a co-production that moved him into the international arena and cast Hauer as a Parisian tramp with a criminal past and prodigious thirst. Hauer is splendid as the man who suddenly receives money from a stranger who intends it to end up at a holy shrine. Unfortunately, good intentions founder on the path that leads to wine, women and indulgence. Olmi's reticence and compassion elevate the work to near-mystical status. Channel4

In this film Olmi proves himself a master yet again. The film - whilst a work of art in its own right - remains profoundly faithful to the mindset of the author of the book on which this film is based, Josef Roth. Slow and meditative, this is a film that can be watched again and again. The music accompanying the film has been chosen with astonishing sensitivity to mood. Indeed, Olmi is perhaps one of the most musically sensitised of all directors. Rutger Hauer gives possibly the performance of his life. (amazon.com)
Nel 1988 Ermanno Olmi porta in vita il famoso racconto autobiografico di Joseph Roth, La leggenda del santo bevitore. Come Roth, anche Andreas (Rutger Hauer nel film), il protagonista, è originario dell'Austria ed è un accanito bevitore. E' emigrato in Francia e vive sotto i ponti di Parigi. Un giorno incontra un agiato e distinto signore (nella sua brevità, ottima l'apparizione di Anthony Quayle) che decide di donargli duecento franchi. L'onore spinge Andreas a rifiutarli, ma il signore vuole comunque dargli quei soldi: se proprio lo vorrà, Andreas potrà restituirli domenica alla piccola Santa Teresa, nella Chiesa di Batignolles. Da questo momento la vita di Andreas si trasforma in un continuo avvicinarsi e allontanarsi da quella chiesa, attorno alla quale gravitano bar, donne e vecchi amici. Dopo aver noleggiato questo film, la prima cosa che mi sono chiesto tornando a casa è stata: «Come può un libriccino di una settantina di pagine finire in un film di oltre due ore di durata?». La risposta è semplice: "La leggenda del santo bevitore" è narrato, alla maniera di Olmi, in modo estremamente lento e ridondante. Meglio la prima parte, più interessante e viva della seconda, dove invece comincia ad emergere una certa ripetitività e dove l'appena citata lentezza inizia veramente a farsi pesare. Nonostante questo è però apprezzabile il lavoro di Olmi attraverso il quale lo spettatore riesce ad approfondire meglio alcuni passaggi o alcuni aspetti che nel libro appaiono invece piuttosto fugacemente. Inoltre, per l'intero film si può contare su una stupenda ambientazione parigina (l'uso del francese nei luoghi pubblici è azzeccatissimo, rende molto bene l'idea dell'estraneità del protagonista), su una buona fotografia (di Dante Spinotti ("Manhunter", "Hudson Hawk" e parecchi film di Michael Mann tra cui "Heat - La sfida", "L.A. confidential" e "Insider - Dietro la verità")), e su una magistrale interpretazione di Rutger Hauer, attore purtroppo spesso sottovalutato e ricordato unicamente nel leggendario ruolo di Roy Batty, il replicante interpretato in "Blade runner". "La leggenda del santo bevitore" è un buon libro, ma che non ho mai adorato più di tanto. Analogamente, riconosco il film di Ermanno Olmi come un lavoro apprezzabile, molto positivo sotto diversi aspetti, ma purtroppo anche prolisso, sovrabbondante e, in più di un occasione, lento e pesante da seguire.

Questo episodio è il primo di una lunga serie di "miracoli", veri o presunti tali, che d'ora in poi si succederanno a ritmo serrato. Andreas, che ha promesso di riportare il denaro in offerta alla statua di santa Teresa di Lisieux, sperpera la sua fortuna fra bordelli e bistrot, ma fallisce sempre l'occasione di saldare il suo debito, finché, ormai agonizzante, viene trascinato in chiesa, dove muore nel tentativo di offrire il denaro a una bambina di nome Teresa che lui identifica con la santa di Lisieux. La leggenda del santo bevitore, “Die Legende vom heiligen Trinker”1, è considerata il testamento spirituale dello scrittore ebreo-austriaco Joseph Roth2, fra i primi e più intransigenti denunciatori della barbarie nazista, morto da esule a Parigi nel 1939. Ermanno Olmi, il regista lombardo si è fatto conquistare dal racconto perché forse le pagine di Roth contenevano un messaggio profondamente religioso che, all’attenzione del regista cattolico, non potevano passare inosservate. Il regista porta la storia dell’oscuro clochard di Slesia Andreas Kartak in una Parigi senza precise connotazioni temporali, certo non da cartolina. Quindi contenuti cari ad Olmi: la tematica religiosa, che sembrerebbe trovare in questo film un particolare approfondimento, confermandosi come uno dei fili conduttori della poetica olmiana. Tuttavia l'intento di questo saggio è quello di evidenziare come l’opera sia molto più di un semplice ritorno allo spiritualismo cattolico caratteristico del regista. Se andiamo oltre la lettura in chiave religioso - salvifica del film, su cui parte della critica ha voluto insistere, esso si rivelerà aperto ad ulteriori approfondimenti e con ciò anche più fedele alla sottile ambiguità interpretativa dell'originale letterario. Olmi ha chiaramente voluto conferire una dimensione simbolica alla vicenda: i personaggi umili, barboni, baristi o sarti parigini piuttosto che piccoli impiegati milanesi o contadini della bassa padana, uomini toccati dalla grazia, dal miracolo della favola, o dalla Provvidenza, in quanto messi nella condizione di accedere alla purezza, alla semplicità, alla verità. La qualità straordinaria della fotografia, artificialmente improntata ai toni del blu, dell'ocra e del grigio, sembra sottolineare i mutevoli stati d'animo del protagonista. I lunghi ed espressivi primi piani dei personaggi e gli ancora più lunghi silenzi, una delle caratteristiche che hanno contrassegnato il percorso artistico di Olmi, che si protraggono quasi in sfida ai canoni della spettacolarità hollywoodiana, inducono lo spettatore a ricercare un senso ulteriore dietro il realismo della rappresentazione. Critica La leggenda del santo bevitore non è forse il più bel film di Ermanno Olmi ma è sicuramente quello nel quale i temi e i valori del regista si rivelano con maggiore chiarezza e semplicità. L'Espresso Questo è uno di quei film che ti regalano vitalità. Francesco Bolzoni, Avvenire Rutger Hauer Olmi pone come sua epigrafe "conceda Dio a tutti noi, a noi bevitori, una morte così lieve e bella". Conceda Dio a tutti i film un finale così lieve e bello. Alberto Frassino, La Repubblica Il film è riuscito a fondere in un unico impasto il professionismo dei due protagonisti con il dilettantismo dei molti anonimi che hanno accettato di recitarvi una parte.
- Rutger Hauer should be well known to readers, for his performances as a psychopath in 'The Hitcher', a barely controlled psychopath in 'Wanted: Dead or Alive' and a psychopath (medieval variety) in 'Flesh and Blood'. Although always near-perfect, he never seemed to be out of second gear which made the prospect of him playing a down-and-out an intriguing one. Set in Paris, he is given 200 francs by a mysterious stranger (Anthony Quayle) with the request to pay it back to a church when he can. Unfortunately, he keeps meeting figures from his past who distract him from this goal and gradually tell us about his earlier life. With no 'action' and almost no plot, the film relies heavily on Hauer, with him rarely being off the screen, so it's a good job he's up to the task. He seems very aware of the risk of over-acting, especially in a character of few words as he has here indeed, if anything he's TOO subtle, making the viewer concentrate to avoid missing the gestures and looks without which some scenes are meaningless. Ermanno Olmi shows us a different side to Paris from that normally filmed, and overall, perhaps the best tribute is to say that from now on, when I see Rutger Hauer, I'll no longer automatically expect him to pull out a shot-gun and start blasting!
The Legend of the Holy Drinker By Joseph Roth Translated by Michael Hofmann
This book, one of the most haunting things that Roth ever composed, was published in 1939, the year the author died. Like Andreas, the hero of the story, Roth drank himself to death in Paris, but this is not an autobiographical confession. It is a secular miracle-tale, in which the vagrant Andreas, after living under bridges, has a series of lucky breaks that lift him briefly onto a different plane of existence. The novella is extraordinarily compressed, dry-eyed and witty, despite its melancholic subject matter.
The Legend of the Holy Drinker was turned into a fine film by Enrico Olmi, starring Rutger Hauer.
