Your computer should be serviced every few months. Depending on the environment where your computer is located, it should be periodically serviced to remove excess dust build up and checked for loose connections. Hard drives should be checked for damaged areas and fragmentation utility run to increase performance. Valuable data should be backed-up to another form of media in addition to saving it in your hard drive to insure that it is not lost. Dust: Every computer is subjected to dust. Dust enters the computers through the fans that are used to circulate air to keep the components cool. Dust build up can create a layer of insulation around the fans and other components that counteracts the cooling effects of the fans causing components to overheat and fail. Hard drive fragmentation/file corruption: Over time the files on the computer hard drives fragment from normal use and performance decreases. Data can become corrupt over time and without proper maintenance, data might be lost. Data back-up: Hard drives are one of the most common computer components to fail. Unless your valuable data is backed-up to another form of media, it could easily be lost forever.
