Programming Competition

As I mentioned on my home page I was thinking about hosting a programming competition.
This could be for AMOS and/or Blitz Basic PC.

Why?
The reason I'm thinking about this is because I can't find any contests to enter and even if I do then I'm not allowed because you need a User ID that you need to pay for, or the subject of  the contest is of no interest to me.

Subject?
The subject of the programming could be anything, I have seen some quite inventive scenarios that allow for a wide scope of creativity; which is good. It could be a game or specific algorithm for a task, artificial intelligence problem, model a real world object/scenario in a program. The subject could be anything and everything. this of course leads us to....

Judging?
Judging entries on whether they fulfill the task specified, originality/creativity, size of code, presentation and such would be a good start. Judging the programming will be myself and some fellow programmers; who of course wont actually get to enter the competition.

Prize?
With regards to prizes this could be a gift token, software, a donation to a favourite charity etc. Plus the winner gets his/her name in lights and their abilities are seen by lots of people around the world. Winning code should be posted along with screenshots and executable for people to download.

That's the idea and this is time so if you have any comments on this brainwave use the contact me page to let me know. Any improvements, suggestions, prize donations, subject ideas or  anything please get in contact; because I feel the competition area of prgramming was not what it should be.

This section is all about a hobby of mine called Programming, a subject which I find fun and rewarding, but sometimes has been extremely frustrating and nearly had me giving it up for good on many occasions.
But at the end of the day it is a subject which I love and will  continue to be interested in and intrigued by for many years to come.
Tutorials

My teaching skills in person leave a lot to be desired but here's my attempt at demonstrating methods and algorithms and explaining how they work.

** Please note that these pages are under construction and I am trying to update them as much as I can. But with work and other commitments I don't have too much time to sit and work on them. But I am trying!!

I am hoping to have tutorials on subjects such as...

  • How to use tile based maps/backgrounds
  • Artificial intelligence; path finding, bullet dodging etc
  • Bullets and weapons
  • Content creation utilities; Map editor, object editor.
  • If you have any requests then you can contact me and I'll try to find an appropriate article/tutorial to answer your query.

Over time I have found a few gems which have helped me on my way. A few sites and documents that I'm sure will help others too.

Tile Game FAQ V1.2 by Greg Taylor is available from lots of places.
Fairly clear way of explaining useful techniques and its not tied to any particular language.

GameDev.Net is a huge source for Game developers. Searchable articles and lots of them. Click here to go there.

Here is a good link I found http://www.lupinegames.com/articles/path_to_dev.html
its all about where to start when learning game programming.
