POINT/COUNTERPOINT
ON ANWR

For drilling in ANWR We can recover a significant amount of oil(about 9.2 billion barrels) and pass those savings onto the consumer.
With the advent of middle east turmoil coupled with the events of 9/11, we must do all that we can to have an independent oil supply.
We would only use 2,000 acres of the entire 1.5 million that are allowed for development. the 1.5 million is only 8% of the entire ANWR. |

Only 2,000 Acres |
Against drilling in ANWR Estimates today by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates the number closer to 3 billion barrels. I know this may sound like a high number, but if we take your highest estimate of 9 billion barrels, that would only be a 15 month supply since we use about 7 billion barrels annually.
The amounts that could possibly be produced would be negligible in terms of over all supply. We would increase world reserves by .03% while we still use 25% of the supply. It would not be enough to stave off the OPEC nations. This is a misleading statistic. Although you maybe confined to 2,000 acres. That only includes the drill pads. It does not include support resources such as roads, pipeline, etc. |
