No visitor to Moscow should leave without taking a trip on its underground railway system, the Metro.
The trains are the usual noisy and crowded ride that they are anywhere, but the stations are something different. Most tour groups are offered the option of a short journey around a few of the central, showpiece stations.
If you really want to get lost, try finding your way around on your own! The Russian language is written in the Cyrillic alphabet and without some knowledge of it you will have great difficulty reading any of the station signs. Another problem is that even if you can recognise the station names, they are not displayed on the platforms but on the wall behind the train.
Tickets are a standard price for any journey, so for the equivalent of twelve pence you can travel from one side of Moscow to the other.
