There are two great natural lakes which we cross on our journey. One is Lake Onega in the north of the country, the other is Lake Ladoga which is in the northern district of Karelia, bordering on Finland.
Kitzi, which we see here is on Lake Onega. All the buildings here are made of wood. It is said that this amazing church, with its twenty two domes, has not got a single nail in its construction.
In the village there, you are invited to go inside the houses and see how they survive the bitter cold winters (which last for half the year). Every house has a large brick stove and enormous amounts of wood for fuel. The old and the children sleep near the stove whilst the rest make their beds further away.
