Wherever you call on route, the locals will turn out to greet the ship. Sometimes it's just a rag bag of local traders and beggars, trying to make a bob or two out of the "wealthy" foreigners, but occasionally the local authority have made an effort to show real Russian hospitality with displays of local produce and music from the town band.
This attractive young lady at our first port of call, Uglich, offered everyone a taste of her sponge cake. This must have been a local speciality. It was only when you tasted it that you realised it was encrusted in salt!
Perhaps they were trying to tell us something.
