 | In order to build a navigation system from the Baltic in the north to the Black Sea in the south, the Ruskies have created many canals, linking the great rivers together. In some places, great swathes of land have been flooded, creating enormous artificial lakes, which allow large ships and barges to make the long journey across the country.
Evidence of former places of habitation is a regular feature on this cruise. One can only speculate on the welfare of the thousands of people who must have lost their homes in the process. This ruined church is just one such reminder of what governments are prepared to do in the cause of progress.
