The windmills at Kinderdijk are considered one of the Netherlands principal attractions and indeed they are an impressive sight, rising from the green meadows and stretching along the water.
They were placed here around 1740 to drain excess water from the polder into the Lek river, which they continued to do until fifty years ago.
According to our friends, the name Kinderdijk (child's dyke) derives from the famous story of the boy who kept his finger in the broken dyke until help arrived and thus prevented an enormous tragedy.
