There are many places to the west and south of Cairo where you can see pyramids. They are lasting monuments to the pharaohs whose bodies were interred in them over four thousand years ago. There is only one site that has the Sphinx, which you see here, and is one of the reasons why the pyramids at Giza are visited by far more people than any of the others (their close proximity to Cairo is the other reason for their popularity). No one has really explained why this gigantic half man, half lion creature should be on this site. It seems to be linked to the pyramid of the pharaoh Khafre, (the middle of the three on this site) but no-one seems to know whether it was there before the pyramids were built about 4500 years ago or if it was specially carved out of a particularly large rock that just happened to be in that position.
