Not all Egyptians depend on tourists for a living. As you travel around you will see what a fertile country the Nile valley is and the large number of its inhabitants who earn their living by farming. The whole of the valley is irrigated by the waters of the Nile, which is pumped into thousands of miles of canals and ditches, by all kinds of imaginative methods.
The main reason for our trip into the country, about 20 miles south of Cairo, can be seen on the horizon. If you look carefully above the head of the donkey driver you can just see a yellow protruberence sticking up on the horizon. To see it more clearly, click on the picture. |
