Aswan is one of the most attractive places on the Nile.
This is where the river becomes unnavigable as it is divided by a number of small islands beyond which are swirling cataracts.
To the south of the town, two dams hold back the river water to form reservoirs, the largest of which stretches back 150 miles into Sudan and provides hydroelectric power for most of the country.
In the picture you can see many of the feluccas or small boats which offer transport for tourists in and around the islands.
