 | This is the Ramesseum, the mortuary temple of Ramses the Second, known as Ramses the Great.
Although Ramses took great care to ensure his immortality, this temple, home to his immortal spirit, was built on weak foundations and is now stands in ruins.
The poet Shelley was inspired to write the poem "Ozymandias" after visiting this place. It reflects on how the inscription "Look on my works, ye Mighty and despair!" seems rather empty now that "his works" are in ruins.
