The visit to Saqqara is usually combined with a trip to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt.
This can be a bitter disappointment unless you realise that the place is now almost non-existent. The only remains are contained in a small museum which closes at four every afternoon, so go there first, then you'll have plenty of time to mooch around nearby Saqqara which has much more to offer than just the Step pyramid.
The main attraction at Memphis is this marvellous granite statue of Ramses II. A similar statue stands outside the main railway station in Cairo.
