The Egyptian Museum in Cairo houses the most important collection of Egyptian art in the world.
The majority of visitors will know little more of these things when they leave the building than they did when they entered as most exhibits are badly displayed and lack any kind of written information. The only part of the museum that most visitors want to see is that section which holds the contents of Tutankhamun's tomb. This is quite understandable, as this part of the museum is the best presented.
Try to avoid morning visits as the place will be heaving with coach parties. If you can choose your time, wait until after 2.00 p.m. when it is much quieter. You will need a guide to take you round if you are really interested in everything there is to see. You will also need to make several visits as more than a couple of hours inside can be exhausting.
The colossal statue in the picture is of Amenophis lll and his wife Tiye. It is over 30ft. high and comes from the necropolis of Thebes (Luxor).
