The unsuspecting tourist might be fooled into believing that the pyramids at Giza, seen here, are situated in some remote desert hideaway.
If you ever go there you will quickly realise that they are on the edge of the vast city of Cairo with its 20 million population, many of whom will be waiting for the opportunity to sell you all manner of goods the minute you set foot in the place. Having been besieged by such an onslaught many visitors take refuge in their hotels and never venture forth again until the bus comes to take them back to the airport. Egypt is not the place for those of a timid disposition.

Although you will be pestered by touts willing to sell you almost anything, you are not likely to be the victim of deliberate crime as Cairo is a surprisingly safe city to wander around in. If you are firm but polite with them, they will usually leave you alone after an hour or two!
