Chapter Two

Friends, Family, and the Press

The boys were in their hotel room. Kevin, Howie, and A.J. in one room; Brian and Nick in the other connecting room. They were exhausted. After singing fifteen songs and dancing most of the time you tend to get tired. They were all in the three's room watching the movie "Ferris Bueler’s Day Off."

"I remember watching this when I was a Freshmen in high school," said Kevin.

"Man you're old," joked Nick.

"I'm still jiggy with it," said Kevin. Everyone laughed.

The phone rang and Brian went to the other room to answer it. "Hello?"

"Hey, Brian! It's Andrea."

Andrea is Brian's best friend from grade school. Kinda like a Dawson and Joey friendship (when they were friends) and without the complications. They stayed over at each other's house, watched movies, did what best friends do. Unfortunately, they haven't seen each other as often since he started dating Lisa. She wasn't that nice and she took up a lot of his free time. The rest of the group always wondered why Brian and Andrea never got together. They seemed so right for each other. Brian would always say, "We're just friends. We always were and always will be."

"What's up?" asked Andrea.

"We just finished our concert. It was amazing, probably our best concert yet."

"Talk about a 'Welcome back.'"

"Heh, yeah. There was a girl who got backstage. She was sweet. It was her birthday."

"Oh cool. She probably had a good time. So when are you coming back to Orlando?"

"Soon I hope. Hope Tyke's all right."

"I bet he is. I'll check on him tomorrow."

"Okay, thanks." The phone began to beep.

"Hey, can you hold on a sec? Someone's calling on the other line."

"Sure."

Brian switched to the other line. "Hello?"

"Hi, this is Cindy. I'm a writer for 'Teen People' magazine. Which Backstreet Boy am I speaking too?"

"Oh, hi, I'm B-Rok. I almost forgot about our interview. Could you hang on for a moment?"

"Certainly."

Brian switched back to Andrea's line. "Hey, you still there?"

"Yeah."

"It's a reporter for an interview so I gotta go. Don't forget to watch us on ‘Total Request Live.’ It'll be on in two days."

"Total Request Live, Monday. Gotcha. I'll talk to ya later. Bye."

"Bye." Brian went back to the reporter. "Okay, I'm back. I was just talking to my friend Andrea."

"Friend or girlfriend?"

Brian laughed. "No, just a close friend," he replied. "I'm not denying anything."

"So do you have a girlfriend?"

"Yes, actually I do. Her name is Lisa."

"Could you describe her?"

"Sure. She's blonde with blue eyes. Ummm...very pretty to sun it up."

"How about your friend?"

"Andrea is about 5'5", brown hair, blue eyes, a casual dresser. We've been best friends for almost fifteen years now. I pretty much know her like the back of my hand and vice versa. Oh, and she always makes me laugh."

"Do the rest of the Backstreet Boys have a significant other?"

"Yes, they do. A.J.'s girlfriend is Patricia. Howie's in Lindsay, Kevin's is Allie, and Nick's is Marie."

"The girls will be disappointed to hear this. Especially Alyssa, my daughter."

"Hahaha. Tell your daughter I said hi."

"Well, she'll be happy to hear that. How do you feel about the instant success of 'Millennium'? Half a million copies on the first day. Now that's a lot! Not to mention the 28 million copies sold of your guys' first US album."

"It's overwhelming. We can't believe it. It's just so amazing."

"What's your favorite song off the new CD?" "My favorite song would have to be 'The Perfect Fan.' It's dedicated to our moms. I wrote it and my school choir sang in it."

"How has touring been?"

"Well, we just finished our first concert off the tour. It gets more fun every time, but very tiring may I add."

"No doubt! You five must be the busiest guys around."

"I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we were. I hate to cut the interview short but I'm beat. I'm sure me and the group will be talking with 'Teen People' in the near future."

"Thanks for your time, Brian. We'll see you soon."

"You're welcome, good-bye." Brian hung up the phone. "God I'm tired," he mumbled to himself. He collapsed on his bed, got under the covers, and fell asleep. Nick, Howie, and Kevin did the same soon after. A.J. stayed up to call his girlfriend. He made sure to be quiet, not to wake the others. They started talking for quiet some time...

"…So when will we see each other again?" asked Patricia.

"Depends on what we're doing after we go on MTV...again. Since it was our first concert in such a long while we got one last vacation. After that it's touring non-stop."

"We gotta spend as much time as we can together. All right?"

"Definitely. I miss you already, baby. Maybe you can come on tour with us. We're all gonna see if we can take our girls if it won't get too crowded."

"If I can I'll take time off from work. Geez, look at the time. Midnight. I'm gonna let you go. I'm tired and you should be too. See you soon. Bye."

A.J. hung up the phone, picked it up, and dialed his friend Steve. He'd call Steve whenever 'cause he's usually up at all hours. They've been best buds since high school, freshmen year.

Surprisingly enough, he wasn't home. A.J. got the answering machine. "Hey, Steve. It's Bone. Where the hell are you? Heh, the group and I are coming back to Orlando for a little bit. We'll arrive within a week so keep your schedule clear. I'll call again before we leave. Later." A.J. hung up and finally went to sleep.

The next morning Howie was the first to get up. Being it such a nice morning he decided to take a stroll around the block. The boys kept where they were staying secret but he figured he'd be mobbed by fans any ways. During the last tour no matter where they went, they were always found. Surprisingly enough, there was not one fan in sight. Geez, though Howie. Q really did keep it on the down low. Without paying attention he bumped right into someone shoulder to shoulder. He turned around and said, "I'm sorry. I wasn't-"

"Howie D?"

"Foxy?"

"Hey! What's up?" It was rapper Foxy Brown. "We gotta get together sometime and work on a song."

"Yeah, we should. Long time no see. Wow, I can't believe I just bumped into you. What are you doing in New York?"

"I'm supporting 'China Doll.' I'm signing autographs at Virgin Records."

"I'm just takin' a walk. Wanna come back to the hotel with me?"

"Sure, I haven't seen the rest of the boys in a while either. What've y'all been up to?"

"Everything," replied Howie with a sigh. "It's not bad, it's good. But it's exhausting." They both arrived at the hotel and got to the group's room. All of them were up now.

"Hey, y'all," said Foxy.

"Hey, Foxy. Good to see ya," said Nick. He was sitting on a bed listening to Nirvana on his portable CD player.

"Yo, we should set a date to work on a song," said Foxy. "Maybe it can be added to my next CD."

"That be cool," said Howie.

"With all the Backstreet fans who'll wanna buy the CD, I'll probably have to have an edited version if we make a song. Ya know, take out the explicit lyrics. Some of your fans probably wouldn't appreciate it."

"Yeah, probably not," agreed Nick.

"Well, maybe not. Instead of my next album maybe we could do something else. I just released 'Chine Doll' no too long ago so a new album for me won't be too soon. How about a remix of 'Hot Spot'? Put it on a single or something. Whatta ya think?"

"That sounds phat," replied A.J.

"When will we have time though?" asked Brian. "We get a short break then we start touring again. I guess we could spare a day or two."

"It wouldn't kill us," said Kevin. "Let' do it."

"Okay, here's my number," said Foxy as she jotted it down on a scrap of paper. "I gotta run. Call me Monday or Tuesday. We'll get together, bye."

"Adios," said Howie.

"Well," said A.J. "TRL tomorrow and after that, our short, last vacation."
