BHARAT SEVASHRAM SANGHA Plots 291-292, Swami Pranavanandaji Marg
|
Aims:
1. Expansion of the Cancer Patient’s Home; increase in
the number of rooms available for cancer patients and their families so that
the Sangha is able to offer its services to many more patients.
2. Starting a diagnostic centre for cancer patients to
help downstage the disease and enable timely treatment.
Introduction:
Cancer
has become one of the ten leading causes of death in
It
is estimated that there are nearly 2 - 2.5 million cancer cases at any given
point of time. Over 7 lakh new cases and 3 lakh deaths occur annually due to cancer.
Mumbai
having some of the leading consultants and hospitals with specialized cancer
care, a large number of patients from all parts of the country come to Mumbai for
treatment.
It
is estimated that nearly 15-20,000 patients come to Mumbai every year for
treatment.
Recognizing
the mental and financial concern of the out-station patients and their
economically exhaustive and time-consuming treatment, Bharat Sevashram Sangha
Navi Mumbai has been providing holistic support services for the patients who
have been diagnosed of cancer and have been referred to Mumbai.
Bharat
Sevashram Sangha Navi Mumbai has set up homes popularly known as Seva Niketans for such patients and
their attendants.
The
support services extended are:
·
Free accommodation
·
Canteen facility at a very subsidized rate[Square meal]
·
Ambulance facility round the clock
·
Financial assistance for treatment of poor patients
·
Free to and fro transportation services for the patients
·
Arrangement of need based blood donation from the pool of volunteers
attached with Bharat Sevashram Sangha
·
Recreational services for the patients
Almost
105 patients along with their attendants stay in these homes per day and access
the transportation facility to pursue their treatment. Such services
drastically cut down the logistic and transportation costs of the patients and
their attendants in the process of receiving time-consuming treatment.
At
present, the organization runs 3 niketans consisting
of 32 rooms and 8 dormitories; a significant increase since the inception of
the first home of 8 rooms in the year 1993.
Besides
providing existing infrastructural support facilities, an intensive counseling,
awareness and guidance service is extended both to patients and their
attendants which serve as the much needed emotional support to the agonized
minds.
6838
patients have accessed these services till date.
Recently, a Chemotherapy
day-care has been started under the supervision of noted medical oncologist, Dr.S.H.Advani who also gives specialized consultation to
cancer patients.
Thus, with time Bharat
Sevashram Sangha has established it’s own little ‘Cancer Care Unit’ offering
specialized consultation, chemotherapy day-care and home for cancer patients.
The need for expansion of the Cancer Patients Home:
As mentioned, nearly 40-50000
outstation patients come to Mumbai every year for treatment.
Bharat Sevashram Sangha Navi
Mumbai has catered to an average of 2000 patients each year. Due to limited
resources and space, the Sangha is unable to provide for more patients and
thus, there is a waiting list of patients at any given point of time.
While the services of the
Sangha have been appreciated immensely,
There is still a long way to
go. The endeavor is to reach out to as many patients as possible through
expansion in the available accommodation facilities as well as support
services.
The centre would look towards
adding atleast 20 more rooms and 5-6 dormitories to cater to the
ever-increasing need.
The need of a Diagnostic centre:
A lot of advances have been
made in the field of Oncology and more and more patients are benefiting from
the same.
However, vital to this is early
diagnosis and timely treatment.
Unfortunately, available
diagnostic services are unable to cater to the large numbers of patients
leading to delayed diagnosis. The quality is often below-the-mark, and the ones
offering state-of-the-art facilities are very expensive making them out of
reach for the average patient.
The irony of this situation as
experienced at Bharat Sevashram Sangha, is that when patients come to the city,
a lot many of them are still in early stages. Unfortunately, by the time they
are diagnosed and treatment is started, patients have reached advanced stages
of the disease leading to enormous expenditure and a long-drawn treatment with
little or no benefit.
Diagnostic
facilities are not only the first step in all kinds of treatment, but an
accurate diagnosis is also central to complete treatment and care.
Thus, the
need-of-the-hour is a diagnostic centre which offers state-of-the-art
diagnostic facilities at reasonable costs. The vision is to have a Full-fledged Diagnostic centre offering: Digital X-Ray,Ultra-sonography with
This centre will go a long
way in not only ensuring early detection and timely treatment, but would also
result in saving time, money and reducing the anxiety burdening the patients
and their attendants.
Thus at Bharat Sevashram
Sangha, a cancer patient would be able to get specialized consultation,
accurate diagnosis and also chemotherapy facilities in addition to various
support services.
On one hand, this would decrease
the dependence on the major hospitals in the city which are overloaded. On the
other hand, patients would get quality services at reasonable costs and most
importantly in a humane manner which is the essence of the Sangha.
