The importance of what was seen streaking across the skies of
Pennsylvania on the 9th December 1965 may never be known but its
importance to the UFO research community is legendary.
The winter of 1965 had been relatively mild and on the 9th the clouds were particularly sparse allowing much of the crisp blue sky to be visible. This, as it turned out was just as well because it enabled a multitude of casual observers to witness an incredible sight. Streaking across the sky from north to south was what appeared to be an unidentifiable craft glowing bright red and apparently on fire as it sped along at some 1000 mph leaving a long thin smoke trail in its wake.
Initially authorities dismissed it as being a meteor but later its trajectory was mapped as flying across southern Canada, Michigan and Ohio at varying speeds (around 1000mph much slower than a meteor). Eventually the object made a U turn before disappearing into the woods of Kecksburg some 20 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (a maneouvre impossible to undertake unless by conscious flight control). The trail of smoke that it left behind was even captured on film by one of the eyewitnesses and to date no known meteor has left such a smoke trail in its descending flight.
Its final descent was seen by two young children playing in the backyard of their house near the Kecksburg woods. Believing that a plane had crashed they alerted their mother who in turn contacted the local police department. Within minutes the police accompanied by the fire department raced too the scene.
They only managed to get to about 200 feet of the crash site when they were halted by military guards who were obviously aware of the object and had reached the scene prior to them. They were informed that the incident was under control and that their assistance was no longer necessary. However the fire crew had managed to get closer. Later members of the team described getting to within 20ft before being turned back. They described an acorn or bell shaped object the like of which they had never seen before. It was approximately 7ft wide, 6ft tall and about 17ft long. It was made from some highly polished grey material and around its circumfrence was what appeared to be a ring or bumper. On this ring were strange hieroglypyic symbols again like nothing they had seen on earth. The symbols comprised of lines and geometric shapes and were described as being almost like that of an ancient civilisation (one of the witnesses was eastern european in origin and was able to categorically state that they were not russian or cyrillic).
It was also noted that the object appeared to have crashed through the trees and embedded itself into the earth at about an angle of 30 degrees. This is too flat an angle for the object to have simply dropped out of the sky and again implies some form of manual or preprogrammed control. Later that evening villagers witnessed a strong military presence driving through the village. Amongst them was a low loader truck which had an acron shaped object on its back covered by a tarpaulin and surrounded by a heavy armed presence. Recent witness reports indicate that the object was transported to Wright Patterson Air Force Base .
So what was the object? It is not possible at this moment to make a conclusive evaluation however it is safe to say what it wasnt.
Firstly because of its flight path, speed and smoke trail it most certainly was not a meteor. It has been suggested that it was a US or Russian sattellite reentry. This is a more plausible explanation except that after detailed analysis of all man-made satelites due for reentry during that period only one (a russian device) was expected and furthermore it was recovered days before the event. What is more despite attempts under the American Freedom of Information Act to get the military reports of the period into the public domain to date very little has become available leading once more to question why after 30 years the Military still believes the event to be a threat to the security of America.
