James Alford Corley came from NC and migrated to MS. In 1856, found in Logan Co., AR. He attended the Baptist Church.

The Paris Express, dated 24 Dec 1925, “Elder John Corley, a well known minister of the Primitive Baptist Church, died suddenly Monday a.m. heart failure was given at the cause of death. He was a carpenter by trade, but for the past few months he had been working in the seed house at the Paris Cotton Oil Co.’s mill. He was on the night shift, and the relief crew discovered partially covered with seed that has fallen on him after the fatal stroke laid him low. The body was warm, indicating he had been dead only a few minutes. Burial was at Moore Cemetery in Greasy Valley, five miles southwest of town”.

Joseph Carter was a farmer. He had immigrated from England as a teenager. Joseph Carter joined the union army as a member of Company H, 1st Regiment, Arkansas Volunteer Infantry (U.S.), 10 Mar 1863. He enlisted as a private at Ft. Smith, and was mustered in, at Fayetteville. Personal description at time of enlistment is as follows: Age 23, height 6 feet 1 inch, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair light in color. Joseph died of a fever at Camp McCulloch, near Springfield, Mo. on either 30 April or 2 May 1863. Both dates are given on affidavits provided in order for his wife to claim her pension. The place of death is identified variously as Crane Creek, Camp McCullar, and Camp McCullar Store. Joseph is buried in a military cemetery near Springfield, MO.

Malinda had to submit several affidavits to claim her widow's pension. Seventeen years after Joseph's death, she married William Y. Corley 12 Dec 1880, in Logan County, Arkansas, and continued to live in the Paris/Subiaco area until her death 10 June 1898. “Malinda is the grandmother who would ride side-saddle to fetch her grandchildren, Myrtle & Ocie, to stay with her”.
