hello again,
I agree with P.Couillard's point that gathering acurate statistics on the HCV epidemic is an important step toward attractng the attention of government and medicine. They would certainly not be lost to the attentions of business either. And if Couillard can show me how the risk of stigmatization as a social devate by a powerful and ignorant segment of our society is the necessary price of destroying the HCV, then I'll pay it. I'd kill to prevent the murder of my wife- but risking stigma by classifying and treating the HCV as an sexually transmitted disease is not necessary.
This is not merely a matter of ivory tower word play. It would be nonproductive to the effort of enlisting those who can help with our cause. Associating the HCV with sexually transmitted diseases will deter those infected from acurately reporting it. Their statistical numbers would drop and the importance of irradicating this virus would appear less urgent. There could be other effects as well. Thru out history misrepresenting illness has caused great suffering to the afflicted. Think about psychiatic compounds, AIDS and leper colonies- then tell me this point is moot!
Yes I'm anrgy. I'm also scared. I will hold onto both. A healthy dose of well-directed anger is necessary because change will only occur when our sense of morality becomes so offended that we are moved to act.
Thanks for letting me rant.
