The Science of Energy

By Lisa Krueger

The use of energy to change your life, be it from physical illness or self-sabotaging patterns, is usually rooted in controversy. While some people enthusiastically believe in energy and that it can be shifted to help you, many more people are skeptical. Perhaps some even hope that energy exists, but they just can’t quite get themselves to believe it. What I want to suggest is that you don’t need to believe anything. There is a science behind energy even if you aren’t aware of it.

The first question people often have about energy is do they really have an energy field? They can’t see it, touch it, taste it – have no sensory awareness of it – so how can they know they really have one?

There is no confirmed scientific answer to this question. However, I believe we can explore one possible explanation based on electrons and what happens when they travel. When electrons move in patterns, they generate an electric field. This is what you notice when you’re near power lines – that buzzing noise and feeling of electricity in the air. You too have electrons in your body – rooted in every single cell. You also have electrons in your central nervous system. It is the electrons throughout your body and those traversing your central nervous system – following standard set pathways over and over again – that may be responsible for creating an electric field around your body.

In New Age circles this is often referred to as an aura, but I call it an energy cell (like a battery cell). The names however, are unimportant. What is important is that without even trying your body can generate an electric field - all because you have cells and a central nervous system with connected pathways that electrons travel down.

The second major question people often have about energy is how someone can change their energy without touching them. People who work with energy routinely change energy of clients who are far away. While I work in my office here in Hailey, Idaho, I have clients in San Diego, Montreal, the east coast, and even as far away as Iraq. How can I actually shift the energy of these people when they are so far away from me? The answer is due to a special principle in quantum mechanics known as the principle of non-locality.

Quantum mechanics is the study of quantum particles. Quantum particles are much smaller than the atoms we learned about in high school science. Studies have reported that these particles exist in fields that are inseparably woven together. Changes in one quantum field causes shifts in another field, regardless of their distance apart. This seamless interconnection transcends the limitations of ordinary time and space and is known as “nonlocality”.

A simple way to illustrate this is to take a piece of cloth, perhaps the sleeve of your shirt and pull it taut. Now, using your other hand press down on the fabric about 4 inches away from the edge. Notice how the area you press down moves throughout all of the cloth (and of course, this is just at the scale at which your eyes can see). Nonlocality allows us to affect each other’s quantum fields without physically touching each other. And without realizing it, we are all doing this all the time anyway.

The third most common question people have about energy is how a human energy field can exist when conventional science hasn’t proven it. To explore this, we need to understand the nature of scienctific progress and look at how science has itself evolved throughout history.

While we like to think of science as infallible and totally objective, it is not. The general media and many scientists would like us to think that it is. And the real truth is that most of us in the general public want science to be infallible too. We want the simple answer of what pill to take that will prevent cancer, that will make us happy, that will heal all our ailments. This has led to the confusing advice about prescription drugs (like Vioxx), the latest diets, and more.

What quantum mechanics shows us is that the very act of asking a question and then gathering data to investigate it influences the results. There are several instances of this in quantum mechanics known as the Observer Bias, Schrodinger’s Cat, and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

A perfect example of this was a debate that went on for years about whether light behaved like a wave or a particle. Researchers on each side argued they were right and gathered lots of evidence demonstrating it. Only later was it discovered that they were both right – that light behaved as a wave if you asked a wave question and like a particle if you asked a particle question. The “correct” answser was that light behaved like a wavicle (wave + particle), but you wouldn’t know that just by doing the research. So the very act of asking the question can limit and skew the data we end up gathering.

In addition, the field of the history of science has found that throughout history conventional science will at first deny radical new ideas even if they make sense for two reasons. First, there’s inertia from the status quo within scientific communities when a paradigm shift is required; in other words, most humans don’t like radical change. Second, for scientists to accept this new radical way of looking at the world, they must have a mechanism of action. This means that scientists need to know the how and why behind the new theory to accept this new worldview.

Copernicus was correct when he first suggested that the earth revolved around the sun, not the other way around. However, he was branded a heretic for such blasphemous beliefs. Not only did it challenge the Church, but he couldn’t explain precisely how this would be. It wasn’t until years later when science had new technological tools for evaluating the solar system that science agreed he was correct.

Another example has to do with continental drift. In the early 1930s, a young geologist name Wegner hypothesized that all the continents used to be one large land mass he named Pangaea. He suggested that, over time, they drifted apart to their current locations. He too was nearly driven out of his profession for such utter nonesense. The reason why? Again, he did not have a mechanism of action that would explain how the continents could move. The prevailing thought at the time was that the earth was solid; if that was the case, the continents couldn’t move. It wasn’t until the 1950s, when researchers studing the magnetics at continental rifts discovered that magnetism shifted over time. From this they began a new inquiry which led to the present day theory of a semi-fluid mantle beneath the earth’s crust. This mantle gives us our volcanic lava and is the mechanism of action for continental drift.

In both of these simple examples, the original ideas were correct. They only lacked the means to describe how and for this they needed to wait until future technological advances could actually provide data that would support their theories.

My argument is that we are in a similar position right now, waiting for new technological tools to explain the details of how the human energy field works and interacts with other energy fields. Without this mechanism of action, conventional science cannot support its existence. Give science another 20-50 years and just as research into chiropractic care and acupuncture finally began confirming their benefits, we’ll also begin to see accepted studies confiming the existence and importance of the human energy field and its complex interactions.

In the meantime, I encourage you to understand that science has shown that we can affect energy fields regardless of how far apart we are (the principle of non-locality) and we have an idea about how your body generates an energy field (electrons in your cells and central nervous system).

Now let me ask you a question. Can you see the electric field around the power lines? What about the waves around your cell phone or microwave? Or even better, what about the radio waves that are bombarding you when you’re in your house – do you hear the radio through them if your radio is not turned on? In all of these instances, you aren’t aware of these invisible forces. Yet you still believe they are there because science has told you they are. But they were there long before science could have told you about them. Just like your energy field.

Hot Trends in the Doggie World

By Fran Jewell

With an eye on your own health and taking a holistic approach to better living, have you taken the time to consider Fido? During the past 10 years dog training and events that you can participate in with your dog have boomed at an exciting rate!

An exciting breakthrough for our canine friends is doggie yoga! Inspired by yoga and the benefits for people, Jennifer Brilliant and William Berloni recently published a book entitled DOGA, Yoga for Dogs. As a result, many progressive dog training facilities have incorporated Doga in their curriculum as part of a healthy means to spend time with your dog. Many of the exercises for dogs come from their natural movements and the exercises of traditional yoga for people. Dog yoga classes are now available in different parts of the country.

The newest training method, Operant Conditioning or “Clicker Training” became popular about 12 years ago through a group of people that took the method from Sea World and adopted it for use with dogs. Operant Conditioning is a motivational, precision, and exciting method that is completely contrary to conditional forced based dog training methods. Operant Conditioning, originally developed by B.F. Skinner, uses the “Clicker” as a marker to mark the moment when the dog does the desired behavior. The click is then followed by a reward, typically food that the dog enjoys.

The Clicker is actually a communication tool that speaks to the dog in a manner they understand, free from emotion that many times human language can convolute. What the clicker does is provide we humans with a communication tool that says “YES” clearly and precisely to the dog. Instead of our old training methods that said a huge “NO” to the dog by using a harsh leash correction, or physical punishment of a shock collar, the clicker actually helps we humans to look for and reward the behaviors we want. In traditional dog training, we focused our attention on the behaviors we don’t want. In many ways, Clicker training teaches we humans to focus on good behaviors instead of bad behaviors and actually can change the way we look at life in a larger scope.

The benefits of clicker training our dogs is not only that our dogs are excited because they now know what we WANT them to do and it is fun for them, but we as humans actually begin to look at our world from a positive point of view.

Summer time for most of us means vacation plans. But, sometimes vacations aren’t as fun as they could be, if only our furry four legged friends could come along. Doggie camps and getaways are hot on the dog owner top lists of things to do. As an alternative to the summer vacation without Fido, camps are popping up in many states including Vermont, Michigan, Oregon and California.

Camps are designed for the dog owner and their dogs so that both can vacation together. Some have educational themes where owners and dogs can partake in specialized training like agility, tracking, hunting, obedience and more. You go for a week or two, stay in a dormitory or private room with your dog and participate in as many adventures as you choose. Many camps have onsite ponds and lakes, and hiking trails.

Waiting lists for time at camp are becoming the norm because of the huge popularity. Camps in wonderful settings only enhance the lure to vacation with Fido. A search on the internet under “dog camps” will bring you pages and pages of opportunities for you and your dog.

When making time to keep yourself healthy, remember Fido and all the exciting new things available for his health, too! Not only will your dog thank you for it, but you will find yourself excited with the new relationship and bond you only enhance by keeping an eye on and participating in new advances in the canine world!
