Changing Oil
Steps
- Get tools and material (see Syllabus) (Check manual for proper oil grade and how many quarts are required).
- Drive vehicle forward onto ramps (This gives you the needed clearance)
- Place wheel chock behind rear wheel (This keeps vehicle from rolling off ramps)
- Place oil drain pan under oil pan drain plug (This prevents any oil from spilling on the ground, which is environmentally unsafe)
- Remove drain plug from oil pan with wrench/socket
- When oil slows to 1 drip every 5 seconds, replace drain plug with wrench/socket (This prevents the new oil from leaking out)
- Place drain pan under old oil filter (Location varies, see owners manual for location)
- Remove old filter with filter wrench, dump contents of filter in drain pan, and clean mounting base. Be sure old gasket is removed from mounting base. (This unsures a clean seal and prevents leaks).
- Apply thin film of oil (DO NOT USE GREASE) to filter gasket (This allows the gasket to seal better and prervents leaks).
- Tighten new filter 3/4-1 turn by hand after gasket contacts base (This prevents over tightening which can damage filter).
- Open hood and remove oil fill cap from engine.
- Place funnel into oil fill opening (Using funnel prevents oil from spilling).
- Start adding oil (check manual from proper grade of oil and how many quarts).
- Remove oil drain pan from under vehicle and set aside.
- Remove wheel chock and roll vehicle off of ramps and check that oil shows
- Check for leaks.
- Stop engine and check level on dipstick (If below full add enough oil to reach full).
- Dispose of used oil and filter at the proper recycling center.
