Places to stay

For those interested in such things I will keep notes on hotels, guesthouses and park benches where I have slept in this section for your information and entertainment.

SINGAPORE
Changi Airport
Arrive as expected at 2.15am in Singapore and proceeded to the observation lounge where the authorities had switched of the lights for the twenty or so people who were sleeping on the floor. I got up around seven in the morning and used one of the restrooms to have a shave and a wash.

The Madras Hotel
No 28-32 Madras Street
Singapore 208422
Tel : 6392 7889
Fax : 6392 6188

I booked a room here via the net and my room was ready for me when I arrived about eleven in the morning. It's frugal and pretty worn around the edges but it does have aircon and a television. A reasonable budget option for those that don't want to stay in a dorm.
Room rate SIN64.00

Albert Court Hotel
180, Albert Street
Singapore 189971

I have stayed in this hotel a number of times over the years and did so again on this occasion on my way back from Bangkok to New Zealand. It's a lot more upmarket then the Madras Hotel (see above) but also more expensive. The best rates are available via the net. This time I had a business room in the new part of the hotel across from the main building and paid SIN140.00

MALAYSIA

CHERATING
The shadow of the moon at half past four
Strange name, strange place. Steve Gonzales the manager is a nice guy who is happy to give advice and even the odd ride here or there. However the place is invested with musquitos and there are no nets. Also water supply was a problem with it continously running out.

DESARU
Desaru Golden Beach Hotel
P.O. Box 50, Tanjung Penawar
81907 Kota Tinggi, Johor

Resort hotel along a beautiful beach. Rooms adequate. Nice swimming pool with waterfall and water slide, 2 restaurants and a bar, but fairly limited menu. Large sand pit for the children. Playground equipment and childrens play room. Beach toys like wind surfers and jet skies for hire. Extensive lawns for the kids to play on.
RM 150.00 per night

Backpacker Central for those coming and going from Taman Negara. Rooms ok, mine had aircon but it had trouble cooling it right down, still it was only RM 30.00 They have a sales spiel for their services thinly disguised as park information but worth attending anyway as you will need a park permit and transport regardless. Their restaurant is crap but there are plenty of decent places nearby.
