6th April 2001

. City today crashed out of the FA Trophy following a 2-0 defeat at home to Canvey Island in the semi final second leg.

The blues new an early goal was essential for them to get back into the tie following last Saturday's disappointing 2-0 defeat in Essex and started the game off well.

Martyn Lancaster headed wide from close range whilst Mark Beesley was unlucky after he was tackled at the last moment just as he was going to tap the ball into the open net following Scott Ruscoe's squared ball.

Canvey started to come into the game more as the half went on though and on 30 minutes they grabbed a goal to effectively finish the tie off, Scott Ruscoe lost possession in the City half and Canvey broke forward in numbers and following some good one touch passing between the Canvey forwards and some sloppy marking by City defenders Steve Parmenter riffled the ball past Wayne Brown in the City goal from close range.

Blues fans now sensed the game was over and proceeded into the Smith Out shouts, also a Smith Out banner was spotted in the West Stand but for some reason was removed by stewards only to return late in the second half.

Into the second half the game went but City still didn't really throw men forward even though they where 3-0 down and even the introduction of fans favorite Jimmy Haarhoff couldn't liven things up as he was closed down quickly whenever he managed to get onto the ball.

Blues players and fans where getting more and more frustrated as it was proving to be one of those days, a Canvey defender hit his own post and Steve Whitehall missed a good chance before Mark Stimson who has played well in both legs dominating midfield hit a 18 yard shot which squirmed past Wayne Brown and into the corner of the net to make the aggregate score 4-0.

This sparked half the East Stand to get up and leave as they'd seen enough whilst the Canvey fans where going wild and couldn't really believe how easy they have found it to get to the final following two pathetic, effortless City performances.

The last 25 minutes or so brought back memories of performances against Brighton and Leyton Orient last season when the blues just gave up. Canvey proceeded to take the piss, keeping the ball from City and with a bit of luck could have made it more.

4-0 slightly flatters City as in both legs Canvey missed numerous clear cut chances whilst City have created little infront of goal in either leg.

Well thats it our seasons over apart from the mickey mouse trophy, lets hope this sparks Mr Smith to now leave.

I wish everyone connected with Canvey the best of luck in the final at Villa Park next month and for the rest of the season in the league.
