31st March 2001

.  City today crashed 2-0 away at Canvey Island in the semi final first leg of this seasons FA Trophy.

City should have lost the game by far more than they did as they put in an awful display and I count us lucky to still be in with a sniff of a final place as Canvey missed numerous clear cut chances to finish City off.

One blues fan said to me on the long  journey back from Canvey "the players let the fans down today" and I couldn't argue with that. The City fans turned up in their hundreds but from the moment the first whistle went Canvey played like a side desperate to reach the final whilst the City players played as though they couldn't care less, they where second in 50/50 challenges and every time they got hold of the ball they seemed happy just to kick it anywhere rather than find another player in a black and white shirt.

Steve Tilson put Canvey into the lead on 28 minutes when he crashed home a Chris Duffy cross. Canvey missed 4-5 clear cut chances before they grabbed a second thanks to a superb 25 yard Wayne Vaughan shot in the second half and it now leaves Chester with a massive uphill struggle at the Deva next Saturday.

I have to say how disappointed I was to hear several Chester fans under the covered area shouting for Graham Barrow's head at the end of the game, yes it was a poor performance today and there have been some poor performances of late but just consider what Graham Barrow has achieved for our club this year: Got us to the Third Round of the FA Cup only to be narrowly beaten at Blackburn, into the Northern final of the Variety Trophy, Semi Final Of The FA Trophy, Sixth in the league which is one of the best positions a newly relegated league side has been in at this stage of the season in years.

He's achieved all this whilst having to work with Terry Smith. I was disappointed with the result and performance today but there's no way you can take it out on Barrow, at the end of the day its the 11 men that go over that white line at 3pm that have to do the job and the effort just wasn't there today.

I would also like to ask these people, who do they intend will take charge if Barrow did go? The answer is quite simple Terry Smith and Gordon Hill and do you really want that? No it would quite simply be a shambles, so instead of moaning and looking for a scapegoat get behind the side next week in the second leg and you just never know football's a funny game as they say.
