Best Bits in Songs - an utterly self-indulgent list
- Nina Simone - I Put a Spell On You. The bit after the horn solo where she actually *imitates* the horn solo using scat. It's brilliant. Worth buying her collected works for this moment alone.
- Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye. There's a bit about halfway through where it sounds like the band are falling off a cliff in slow motion, accompanied by a selection of lawnmowers and buzz saws. pure noise magic.
- Aretha Franklin - pick any song. pick any moment.
- Sting - Fields of Gold. any time he mentions the word barley. Gotta love that word
- Nick Cave - Red Right Hand. the groovy instrumental part in the middle, also any mention of the words Red Right Hand
- Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah. The beautiful, perfectly controlled crescendo in the second verse
- The Smiths - How Soon Is Now. The first four bars. Love those shimmering guitars. (ooh I rhymed..)
- Mercury Rev - Holes. The sax solo near the end. Just too pretty for words.
