NEW INDONESIAN AND MALAYSIAN RESTAURANT *****
18 Doyers Street, New York (Chinatown)
from Bowery St, right on Pell St, left on Doyers St

My friend Luan brought me (and another friend Jon) to this restaurant. It is almost invisible from the street - and even the street itself is more like a small alley - because all you can see of it is a door leading to stairs leading down. Luan called it the 'hole in the wall'; she didn't even know its name.

Luan recommended the mee siam (fried bee hoon with a special paste), but Jon and I decided to go for the gado-gado (an Indonesian dish that contains bean sprouts, tofu, cucumber, potato, covered in peanut sauce). Jon had his with egg noodles [~US$4.95#], I had mine with lontong (rice cakes) [~US$5.45#].

The food was phenomenal and the prices were more than reasonable. The servings were generous. I would've liked to have tried the hainan chicken rice [~US$3.50#] but I didn't have time to go back. This place is a must to visit if you want to have authentic south-east asian food in New York.
