Making Angel Wings

I have had several people ask me how I made the wings for my angels at Christmas time, so today we're going to make Angel Wings similar to the ones on the doll above. I use Paintshop Pro and this tutorial is made for that. If you don't have Paint Shop Pro, you can download a 30 day trial at Jasc.com.

Now since I'm making these wings from scratch for this tutorial, I'm not going to promise that they will look exactly like the picture above when we're finished. Each time you draw something, it's going to come out differently, but it will be close.

Find a doll that you want to add wings to, add a new layer (name it wings), and we will use the lasso tool to draw the wing outline. Once selected, keep it selected until I say other wise. This will help prevent spillovers. Since her arms are up in the air, you'll need to imagine where the wings should be and draw them in. Since they will be on your new layer, we will move them below the arms later on.

Flood fill your selection with white and add another layer. Name it shading. On this layer, we are going to add the darker shadows of the wings. Be sure to notice that some of the shading must go out towards the arms. I used the airbrush and #B5BDF5 for the shade color. You will have to adjust your brush size numerous times for this. The upward stroke was made using a size 8 brush and the downward stroke used a size 3. Use your own discretion as to the size. If it's a larger shadow, use a larger brush... etc.

Now take your Smudge Brush and set it to Size: 17, Hardness: 0, Opacity: 35, Step: 1, Density: 100, and using short, fast strokes blend the shadow upwards and then down towards the tip of the wings, making the downward stroke stay to the right and gradually get smaller.

Add a new layer (name it highlights) and let's add some highlights and color. You have your choice of colors here, but I used #F3AFE2 (pinks),#F3CB2D (yellows), and #97C0E9 (blues). Using these colors, make smaller lines going down along the wing span as if they were feathers.

First take your smudge brush again and smudge the lines down a bit. Add more color if you need to and smudge some more. There's no limitation on adding color here. It just needs to be something you like. Don't smudge too much, but make sure the lines are blended together. Now here's the trick. Go up to "Effects", "Blur", "Motion Blur" and I set mine as high as it would go. Make sure to point the angle in the direction your wings flow, and then click okay. This blurs it downward perfectly for you.

Now Merge the three layers the wings are on. DO NOT merge the doll or background...if you use one like I do, with the wings. Turn those layers off until you have the wings merged. Then you can turn them on again if you want.
