Battery Woes, part 2  #

The battery on the Probe has been replaced as the old one won't hold a charge, but that's not the reason she won't start. Somewhere in the starter circuit there is a short that is tripping a fuse when the key is turned to start. Yeah, digging through the wiring will be so much fun!.

Battery Woes  #

Two days ago I charged up the batteries for the Probe and Corolla. They have been sitting for a while, not having the time or money to do much with either car at the moment. Took the Probe down to the car wash spot at our apartments, and now the battery does not have enough juice to get her started again. She sits forlornly right now while I'm charging the battery at the apartment. Lately it seems to be one thing after another, but hey, the Probe's all shiny now!

Oil Decision  #

The Escort received an oil change, getting Mobil 1 for a change, and she definitely likes it. Last time I tried Valvoline's oil for cars with extended mileage, and couldn't tell a difference, but the Mobil 1 made an impression on the 'scort. She runs a little smoother now, so it's going to be the oil I use from now on.

Problems Solved, Problems About To Be Solved  #

Yesterday the mystery of the malfunctioning Escort was solved. Apparently the ignition system grounds through a clip on the battery, which is where the problem was hidden. The plastic clip had cracked along the bottom, and the inside was corroded, but you couldn't tell just by looking at it. Some time with baking soda and water cleaned up most of the problem, and I'll be getting a new clip as soon as possible. The Escort now runs like a champ again, finally!

$51.00 has secured me an ECU for the 5EFHE engine that's going into the Paseo. US Models make do with the 5EFE engine, the added H means a variable induction system, higher compression, different cam profiles, and a different exhaust header. Now all I have to do is modify the wiring harness, figure out where the vacuum line for the variable intake is routed, and purchase a complete exhaust manifold and gasket. For now we're going to use the US intake and exhaust manifolds just so we can get her running. I can't wait!

Escort Update  #

The Escort is having problems, having developed a miss throughout the rev range. We've eliminated many possible culprits, but still haven't solved the problem. Argh!

Probe Update  #

The Probe made it through transmisson surgery just fine. The new tranny works fine, and the vehicle is now mobile again. The nineteen months she sat waiting have not been too debilitating on her, the paint job is a little rougher, and she runs a little rougher than before. The only major problem I've seen so far is the starter. When she's cold it works just fine, but after she's warmed up the starter sounds like it's grinding against something. Looks like that's going to be the next thing that gets taken care of, hopefully it's just the starter and not a sign of something larger going wrong. The joys of car ownership!

Progress  #

Yesterday was spent getting the Paseo ready for it's engine swap. All the accessories were removed, wires marked for reinstallation, and anyhting that is going to be in the way no longer is.

The block will stay in place until the replacement engine arrives, hopefully later this month if the finances work out. I can't wait.
