In alot of Philadelphia restaurants you will often find photos of Philadelphia celebrities or Philadelphia natives who have gone on to fame and fortune, and the same holds true for the City Tavern at 2nd and Walnut , except the celebrities who have eaten at City Tavern reads like the bottom of the Declaration of Independance, "Washington", "Jefferson", "Franklin",etc, thats because the City Tavern was the "in" place to be in Colonial Philadelphia.

The present building is an exact recreation of the original building that was destroyed by fire in 1854, in that fire a young bride and several of her bridesmaid died.

Upstairs the woman in the bridal party were preparing the bride and themselves while the groom and his friends and family were in the tavern.No one noticed the fire starting and it was too late for her to be saved. The fire was of such magnitude that the building was condemed.

Today the City Tavern is once again apart of the social scene of Philadelphia and many wedding receptions have taken place there, some photographers have claimed to have picked up an image of a woman dressed in a brides outfit, she has been seen by many workers and diners roaming the halls and corridors of the City Tavern.
