glutton.jpg (16121 bytes)Introducing our senior food critic "Uncle Pasha", a connoisseur of cheap fattening things and an accomplished creator of snacks- out- of-anything improvisations. Here he is captured in the process of consuming a Chinese-style spaghetti dish of his own making during one of his Sunday afternoon gatherings attended either by the new and naive guests or those who've known him long enough to develop mutual tolerance..

Webmaster's Note

In previous editions of the site you may have read on the difficulty or impossibility of finding vegetarian food in Russia. I, the new administrator of www.vegrussia.org, being a practising Russian national and a vegetarian, declare the above allegation to be but a weak shadow of truth.  True, locating vegetarian/vegan food and products in Russia may be something of a challenge. It is not that they are not available. They are there but people don't know.  As an administrator of this site I'll try to fill this gap. .

Information provided here has either been inherited from the previous site or submitted by others. My own notes are can be found at http://www.unclepasha.com/~paulv/vegetarian_russia.htm.

Moscow

vegstore_sm.jpg (8125 bytes)  A Moscow shopper is dazzled by a choice of fruits and vegetables. These days such abundance is not an exception.

"...Actually, in Moscow it was not so bad for someone who can afford the restaurants. I always found something to eat, the waiters were very friendly and helpful, and the food was quite good to my surprise. The price - it was a little cheaper than in NY but obviously very expensive for a "non-New Russian...".      - Alex (a po-russki, Sasha)

schnitzel_sm.jpg (11767 bytes) Being a carnivore at heart, I strongly recommend this specific type of vegetarian fake meat as giving the most realistic impression that you are eating a piece of someone rather than something*. I usually get it in the House of Honey (Novokuznetskaya) or The Soya Center (Pervomaiskaya in Izmailovo).

_______________
*I often get in trouble for statements of this sort. This is why this site is looking for a real vegetarian as a webmaster. Recently I was a fragment of a movie about a couple of vampires who realized that sucking blood of living human beings is bad and developed some sort of a substitute. I am in about the same position I guesss. Watch out for more "meat-like" food here while I'm the webmaster. After a good replacement is found politically and stylistically incorrect information will be moved to the vegetarian corner of my site www.unclepasha.com so don't despair, these days you can satisfy both your thirst for blood AND the desire not to cause pain to others.

From our mailbox:

How can you promote restaurants that serve murdered animals! Only pure vegetarian (preferably vegan!) establishments should be listed here.

Our comment:

Think of me as promoting not a restaurant, but a vegetarian option it offers. The aim of this site, at least while I am largely responsible for its content, is to present information to make travelling in Russia easier to the members of the international vegetarian community. I understand and even share your sentiment, but let me be a pragmatic information gatherer for practical travellers. If you are looking for ritual purity Russia is a destination to be avoided altogether..
