Anyway! IN ADDITION to all that obvious stuff, it also means that the copyright holder retains the sole right to make money off of even the likeness of their copyrighted material. This can be tricky, because in the case of images, even if you don't take/scan the image "pixel for pixel" (ie. if you were to make your own version of an image), you may still be infringing upon a copyright. The exception is if you are making a parody, but even in this case, it most likely depends a lot on how much each party can pay their lawyers.

For example, if you were to draw a picture of a girl who looked mostly-sorta-kinda like Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi, and were to use this image to decorate this completely unrelated book you were writing, How To Install Your Ford Flathead V8 Engine, you would be infringing on the copyrights of Yuu Watase, Flower Comics, Pioneer, Emotion, Viz, etc, etc... This is because the image of Miaka (even though you drew her stroke for stroke by yourself) is recognizeable as Miaka and as such, could be argued as contributing to the sales of your book.

Now keep in mind, I am no lawyer, and no legal expert, but these are my vague notions of the meanings of the legal term "copyright."

nothing down here.
