What
can counselling do?
Modern counselling
is based on the latest findings about psychological functions: the human
givens. This means that counsellors and therapists trained in the latest
techniques can cure trauma, lift depression, and help people adjust to
life changes, quickly and effectively, and at a lower cost than more traditional
techniques. Typically Human Givens therapists work from between one and
six sessions.

Depression
Effective psychotherapy is more helpful than anti-depressant medication
in lifting depression, and it has no side effects. Good counselling works
from day one, unlike drugs which take weeks to kick in. Even for people
established on medication, HG counselling will help ensure they do not
slip back into depression when the course of treatment ends. New knowledge
has shown us that depressed people dream too much, which exhausts them.
They dream too much because they spend so much time focussed backwards
and inwards, in anxious, negative, or miserable thoughts. The dreams are
needed to defuse these arousing thoughts. It is a vicious cycle that can
easily be broken and people can be re-engaged with their lives, and experience
meaning, interest, and pleasure again.
Case
study - A young woman was suffering from a bout of disabling depression.
Her life had ground to a halt and her business was static. She could not
cope with domestic demands. She had suffered a lot of sexual abuse in
her youth, and her subsequent relationships had all failed. In trance,
her total trauma history was desensitised with a a single process. To
promote change, she was told a story about transformations, and the treatment
included the suggestion that she invite a friend round for a meal to help
with the tidying. Within a couple of weeks, she had sorted the flat, and
focused on building up her life and business. On follow-up six months
later, she reported that her life was going great, and had never been
better.
