~~Reviews from 1999 shows ~~

~Miscellaneous Reviews throughout the year!~

I went to Manifest Records in Charlotte about 6
weeks ago for there grand opening. I went to see Jump
Little Children but I also saw The Gufs perform. They
were awesome. They were giving autographs so I bought
their cd so I could get them to sign it for me. They
were all really nice. They seem to really care about
there fans. They really act like they appreciate them.
Anyway, I didn't listen to anything else after I got
the cd it was so good. They are so awesome and anyone
who hasn't heard them you should buy the cd. You will
love it! It is definitely worth it!

~Chicago River North Summer Festival~ 7/10/99

The gufs put on another fantastic show. They showed
tremendous energy and unbridled enthusiasm. The crowd
was on the smaller end, 500 to 1000, but they were
attentive and into the music. I was fortunate enough
to be standing next to the stage and was treated to an
excellent view and wonderful sound. The lighting and
sound mix was perfect as always. Belong, Stuck, Trees
and really, all of their new stuff, is superb live.
It is great that they mix a lot of new stuff with a
little old stuff so there is something for everyone.
At one point Goran asked if it was okay if the played
an old song (underbreath). The two people next to me
screamed "Contradictions" and Goran looked straight at
them, smiled, and played the opening cords of it.
Then he said "Nah, I don't think we could do that if
we tried!" It seems they have more of a sense of
humor in their shows of late. As an added bonus I was
able to talk to Dejan for about 10 minutes before the
show, and Goran briefly after. Dejan said they had a
wonderful time at summerfest the week before and was
glad to see so many fans came down to chicago. The
gufs proved once again, that they are a superior live
band.

~Modjeska Review~ 4/24/99

The Modjeska show was great! I was lucky enough to
get there early and get great seats. (second row in
the standing area...between Goran and Dejan) They
played an array of songs..from "Underbreath" to
"Ashes". Goran's voice was as always incredible, and
the enthusiasm of Scott, Morgan and Dejan was just as
unbelievable!!! The show was the first I had seen
them since Whitewater and it was twenty times better.
Everyone there was a fan...unlike Whitewater, so there
wasn't the annoying crowd of talkers. =) Plus, being
closer to the stage adds so much...I love being able
to see their facial expressions when the four of them
play. Also, I loved Pound!!!! The lead singer had a
very great stage presence and their songs were also
great. Seeing them live enticed me to buy their
CD...which is also incredible. But over all the show
was great! I had a wonderful time, definitely glad I
went!!!

Let me start with this: I hate concerts. I hate the hours of standing, the pushing, the shoving, the heat, the extreme volume and sheer amount of noise in the room -- i just don't like them. I do, however, love "The Gufs", and when my friend told me about this concert I decided that I had to see them in concert at least one time before they made it big. And man am I glad I did. While "Pound" was not quite my ball of wax, they kind of encompassed everything I hate about concerts, they were an excellent choice for opening band as they were really pumped up the crowd. The wait between sets may have been a little long, but once "The Gufs" came out, the wait all seemed worth it. It helped that I had already had my hands on the CD since the promo came out, and I knew the beats and choruses to the majority of the songs they played. Even so, a friend that came with, visiting from Colorado, that had never heard of them, really enjoyed the concert and has been begging me ever since to borrow my Guf's CD's. The band played with an enthusiasm that really can't be faked. When they came out and said that it was good to be back in Milwaukee, you felt like they really meant it. There was a perfect mix between new and old songs, keeping the crowd enthused and singing along while still promoting their new CD, which is, by all means excellent. When Goran sang "everybody wants to be on MTV" and then pointed to himself, passing it off, was truly a magical, comical moment that truly transcended through the audience. In the end, if this CD doesn't get the band the recognition they obviously deserve, I don't think this world deserves them. They put on an awesome live show, and know how to make an awesome product. If any of them are going to read this, let it be said: Good luck. The talent is obviously there, but in this finicky, here today, gone tomorrow world, luck is the largest factor in a field where it really doesn't belong. So, once again, good luck. FYI: I hear "Last Good bye" is the song with the heaviest rotation in Milwaukee. Something like 20 spins a day. Thumbs up to that. --Nate Ziarek ~Modjeska set list~ Give Back Yourself Lost Along the Way Fear Me Now Mistake Happily Ever After Listen to the Trees Dead & Gone Stuck Last Goodbye Surrounded Belong Sunday Driver Crash Smile ENCORE Ashes Somewhere Out There Under Breath ENCORE I Get By (With a Little Help From My Friends)

~Whitewater Review~ 3/12/99

AWESOME SHOW!!!! The Gufs sounded great! All the new songs are really good. They had a contest at the show and ten very lucky people got the new cd allready. I didn't win. I did however win tickets to the show through 91.7. I live in La Crosse so they called me and I was live on the radio station that I don't even pickup here. I won row 10 tickets so that made the night even better. The show was amazing. The only problem was the crows was not very good. Half of the first 10 rows were sitting down for the whole show until the end. Made me very dissapointed. Good size crowd though. I think about 900 tickets were sold. From what I heard. Otherwise, the new songs sounded spectacular. I can't wait for the album to come out. "Last Goodbye", "Give Back Yourself","Mistake", "Happily Ever After", "Stuck", "Ashes" were the new songs they played. Very very deep "Ashes to Ashes" was played on a piano by Goran. Actually the first time I believe I've ever seen him on a piano before. Very cool. Here is the setlist: "Lost along the Way" "Fear Me Now" "Last Goodbye" "Listen to the Trees" "For a Ride" "Give Back Yourself" "Crash" "Sunday Driver" "Mistake" "Belong" "So Easily" "Happily Ever After" "Stuck" "UB" Encore: "Ashes to Ashes" -just Goran on the piano "Smile" "Help" The crowd I might add again was definetly made up of either you were a Gufs fan or you weren't. During "Belong" you could tell who knew the gufs or been to previous shows and the same with "Listen to the Trees". Other than that the crowd was good. They gave them a good loud appreciation. I loved the show. I wanted to meet the band after the show so bad. They were so tight there with meeting the band it seemed like. There was hardly anyone there after the show. I stuck around and talked to the radio station people and told them I won tickets and I would like to meet the band. they were kinda jerks.I felt like I was going meet the rolling stones or something. I did get a setlist and a pick but geez. I was kinda upset. I've only met the band once and that was at the taste of madison. That was easy to meet them. Review from Byron..
