Buster Posey Miguel Cabrera
This year's MVPs, Buster Posey and Miguel Cabrera

The MVP award is awarded at year's end by the Baseball Writers Association of America based on a point-system determined by first- to 10th-place votes (14-9-8-7...3-2-1).

On 17 occasions one player received all of the available first-place votes in his league, making him a unanimous choice. The AL players so honored are Ty Cobb (1911), Babe Ruth (1923), Hank Greenberg (1935), Al Rosen (1953), Mickey Mantle (1956), Frank Robinson (1966), Denny McLain (1968), Reggie Jackson (1973), Jose Canseco (1988), Frank Thomas (1993), and Ken Griffey, Jr. (1997). The six unanimous NL selections are Carl Hubbell (1936), Orlando Cepeda (1967), Mike Schmidt (1980), Jeff Bagwell (1994), Ken Caminiti (1996), Barry Bonds (2002), and Albert Pujols (2009). Hubbell's distinction carries an asterisk, though, as two of the panelists didn't cast votes and were not replaced on the committee.
