Jose Fernandez Wil Myers
This year's Rookies of the Year, Jose Fernandez and Wil Myers
The rules that determine whether a player is a "rookie" or not have been tinkered with a couple of times since the award's inception. For example, in 1950, Walt Dropo, with 41 career at-bats prior the season, was deemed eligible as a rookie, while Al Rosen, with 58 at-bats, was not.

Now, the rules are clear. To be deemed a "rookie", a player must have not have 130 career at-bats, have pitched 50 innings, or spent 45 days on an MLB roster.

The award is voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America, and is awarded based on a point system consisting of first-, second-, and third-place votes (5, 3, 1).

There have been 18 unanimous Rookie of the Year selections since 1947: Frank Robinson (NL, 1956), Orlando Cepeda (NL, 1958), Willie McCovey (NL, 1959), Carlton Fisk (AL, 1972), Vince Coleman (NL, 1985), Benito Santiago (NL, 1987), Mark McGwire (AL, 1987), Sandy Alomar (AL, 1990), Mike Piazza (NL, 1993), Tim Salmon (AL, 1993), Raul Mondesi (NL,1994), Derek Jeter (AL, 1996), Nomar Garciaparra (AL, 1997), Scott Rolen (NL, 1997), Albert Pujols (NL, 2001), Evan Longoria (AL, 2008), Craig Kimbrel (NL, 2011), Mike Trout (AL, 2012).

Only twice has a player been named his league's top rookie and MVP - in 1975 when Boston's Fred Lynn won the honours, and in 2001, when Ichiro Suzuki came over from Japan to fetch the honours; neither, strangely, were unanamious choices for the Rookie of the Year Award.
