About Me

Well, what to say. I was born April 22, 1980 (Earth Day, for those who care), which makes me 22 years old. I'm a first-year graduate student at University of Alabama-Birmingham. I'm in the Cellular and Molecular Biology program, and I'm planning on getting my Ph.D. in microbiology. I earned my bachelor's degree in microbiology at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. If you're bored, you can see a list of courses I'm taking, have taken, and whatever else I feel to include here.

I always try to look for the good in life and can be very idealistic. I love music, science, and literature. In relationships, I'm a romantic at heart.

In spite of my background in science, I do have a strong artistic side. In high school, I was in several plays and a musical. I love to sing, and am a tenor. I was heavily involved in choir in high school, and I took part in the Choral Union as an undergraduate, where I got to take part in singing some major classical works including a Bach cantata, Haydn's Nelson Mass, and Brahms's Nanie. A couple of years ago I went on a big classical music kick and I've ended up with a lot of Bach CDs, but I do listen to contemporary music, and I've been developing a fondness for dance/techno.

I came out of the closet during the summer after I graduated from high school. It was one of the most difficult things I had ever done, but it was something I had to confront. I'm very happy to say that my friends and immediate family have been supportive. I really don't know what I would do without them. I have not come out to my extended family yet, but I'm hoping to do that soon when some other family affairs clear up.

Since I came out, I've tried to do what I can to improve the situation for GLBT people. I've talked to several Understanding Human Differences classes and also my college Speech class about my experiences. I think it's important to educate people when possible. I was also vice president of Straights and Gays for Equality at UW-L for a semester.

For several years, I was an Assistant List Manager for the 17-21 Youth-Guard GLBT support lists. I was forced into retirement due to ageism, but I may take up another task soon. If you're GLBT or unsure, I highly recommend you join the list for your age group. They can provide a tremendous amount of help for those difficult times in your life.

That's all for now. Don't forget to send an e-mail or sign my guestbook!
