THE VOLLEY AND OVERHEAD

New tips will be added constantly as they come in.

-Follow the ball when coming to the net When you are coming to the net for a volley it's vital to know where to stand when preparing for the volley. If you hit the approach shot to the left side of the court, move more towards your left. This cuts of the angle of your opponet to pass you.

-Split step at the net This the most important part of hitting a succesful volley. By split stepping when you're volleying gives you great preparation on hitting a volley on either side of the court. The time to split step is at the point of your opponets contact of the ball.

-Move sideways when preparing for a Overhead The mistake most people have when hitting overheads is having there body facing parallel to the net when they are hitting a overhead. By doing this you have no power or accuracy because there is no shoulder turn or power. By turning your body perpendicular to the net gives you the opportunity to hit the ball with power and placement.

-The drop shot The key to hitting a drop shot is to have the balls highest point not when it's over the net but a couple feet before it reaches the net. This gives your opponet less time to reach the drop shot. To check if your drop shots are up to speed. Practice on the service line hitting drop shots and see how many times it bounces on the other side of the court before reaching the service line. If it bounces at least 3 times, means you're hitting a good drop shot.

-Jab the volleys Many people when hitting volleys tend to take a swing at the ball. This shoul never been done when volleying. For a high volley move your body toward the ball and jab the ball with a firm wrist. Giving you a good crisp shot that is very consistent. When hitting low volleys slightly opeb the face of the racket. Adjusting it depending on how low the volley is and the speed.

-Cross Over when reaching for volleys When reaching for volleys far away it is essential to use the crossover step. When a ball goes to your extreme right, move your left foot in front of your right. This gives you maximum reach in the shortest amount of times. Do the same with hitting it to your left. move your right foot in front of your left.

-Use a loose grip for better overheads When hitting overheads its easy to hit an unforced error by hittin it too long or in the net. If your are hitting it too long it is because you don't have a loose enough follow through. By having a looser grip and relaxing you arm you will have fast head speed from the racket making contact earlier and hitting it down better.

-Play high Lobs off the bounce When hitting high lobs it is very hard to get the timing right when hitting a overhead. When you feel you can't time the overhead let the ball bounce. It should boucne fairly high , enough to still smash it. It may give your opponent more time to react but will give you a better shot at a good overhead.
