Chapter Twenty-Three

Mackenzie folded her jean jacket over her arm, grabbed the last teddy bear off of the counter, and sat on the edge of her newly-made bed. She read the tag:

Mac-
You know how much you mean to me and I don’t know what I would do without you. Please get better for your sake and mine. I’m sorry about the way I reacted to the news. I was stupid and I hope that you can forgive me. You’ll always hold my heart.
-Nick

“I mean every word you know?” Nick said.

Mackenzie looked up startled. She had realized what was most important to her if she was going to win the battle over cancer and therefore, moved on from the fight she and Nick had had. She was wrong not telling the one she truly loved that she had a serious illness and he was wrong leaving her on her ass like that. “I know Carter…and I’m sorry I was just too scared to tell you when it mattered the most. I now realize that that almost cost me the one I love.”

“I love you more,” Nick challenged playfully. He walked over and gave Mackenzie as strong of a hug as she could handle. Mackenzie noticed how good it felt to be back in Nick’s arms. “Now about this cancer thing…you think you can kick it’s ass?”

“No,” Mackenzie answered.

“Mac,” Nick said sternly. “Don’t you dare st…”

“But I think that we can.”

Nick smiled and gave Mackenzie a kiss on her forehead. “Let’s go Miss. Roberts.”

The next few months were extremely hard for Mackenzie, Nick, and everyone else surrounding them. Everyday, Mackenzie would receive medication, shots, or radiation therapy. Finally, four months later, the cancer was beginning to let up and after the fifth month, Mackenzie’s cancer had disappeared. “Well Nick,” Brian said. “You still reign as the biggest wimp in America. Man, I used to think that Mackenzie was bad…”

“Hey,” Mackenzie cut him off. “Be kind.”

“You didn’t let me finish,” Brian eyed Mackenzie and smiled. “I was gonna say, ‘until now…damn, look at her’.”

On their wedding day, no couple had ever looked happier. The longing in both Nick and Mackenzie’s eyes said that they would go on to have a very happy life, which was easily accomplished. It is said that you can easily find someone who you can live with, but when you find someone that you can’t live without…that’s love…and that is what was shared between Nick and Mackenzie.

The reception held so many moments that the happy couple would remember for the rest of their lives. A huge wedding cake was nearly destroyed when AJ and his girlfriend, Jasmine got into a cake fight causing the too of them to disappear for a while. Howie was introduced to Mackenzie’s friend Courtney and the two of them seemed to click. Brian and Kevin just basked in married life as they watched their group-mate Nick and their best dancer stare longingly into each others eyes, feed each other cake, and dance the night away.

"So, where's the honeymoon?" Nick asked. "You wanted to plan it out...where are we going?"

"You'd like to know...wouldn't you?" Mackenzie smiled.

"I guess that means that you're not telling me?"

"Not on your life. I guess you'll see when the plane lands in Italy, you know?"

Nick smiled, "You gave that one away pretty fast. Jeez, I thought you were better at keeping secrets than that."

"Yeah, you know I am. I just figured I give you an easy one. Happy?"

Nick leaned over and look Mackenzie's face in his hands while giving her a series of soft kisses and smiling in between. "Uncontrollably."
