Chapter Twenty-Two

“This isn’t looking good!” The delivery doctor yelled. “The baby’s breached!”

Linda screamed in pain as the doctors yelled for her to not push. “Why can’t Mackenzie be here?” Linda asked herself. “She got me through three out of the four of my deliveries…why not this one? Why did God decide to add more to the pile?”

Seconds later, one of the doctor’s announced that Nick was here. After the situation with the baby had been taken care of, Nick was allowed in and together, he and Linda got through the delivery in less than 4 hours.

Mackenzie was fighting so hard to open her eyes but it seemed as though they had been glued shut. Nick’s voice was surrounding her: “It’s beautiful Mac. Seven pounds eight ounces. Her name’s Micaela and she’s desperate to meet her older sister. C’mon Macky…”

“The baby!” Mackenzie thought with a new urgency. She began fighting so hard that the heart monitors went crazy.

“Mac?” Nick asked. Once he realized what was actually going on, words of encouragement flowed from his mouth. “C’mon Mac, you’re a fighter. Wake up!”

Pain sliced at Mackenzie’s nerves as she concentrated on opening her eyes. Finally both eyes slowly fluttered open and then closed again. When they opened for the second time, Mackenzie noticed that the pain was leaving her and being replaced by new hope.

Nick wasn’t sure what to do. He jumped out of his chair so fast that it tipped over with a loud bang. A nurse walked in to see what the commotion was about and was amazed beyond words to see Mackenzie conscience. She quickly called for a doctor and in less than five minutes, Mackenzie was beginning to regain movement.

Corey, Jack, Haylee, and Natalie made their way into Mackenzie’s room followed by Linda, who was holding Micaela while being pushed in a wheelchair. One by one, they each crowded around her bed and spoke at once. Finally, when things had calmed down, Mackenzie attempted to answer questions one by one using hand motions and pointing at objects. The coma that Mackenzie had suffered had caused temporary impairment to Mackenzie’s speech and motor skills but no one seemed to be complaining as Mackenzie was out of the coma and regaining strength by the minute. Hours later, Haylee and Jack could be found curled up on two of the chairs placed around the room and Corey had made himself comfortable on the foot of Mackenzie’s bed holding Natalie in his arms. All four of them were sleeping. Linda had been taken back to the recovery room. It was then that Mackenzie realized that there was one face she hadn’t seen that had to have been there before. Where was Nick? Mackenzie could’ve sworn that she had heard his voice before she woke up, so where was he? Mackenzie listened for his familiar voice and tried to peer around the doorway into the hall but she still had no idea where Nick was. Just when Mackenzie had given up hope and leaned her head back on a pillow, the light of the doorway became blocked in the shape of a man causing a shadow to be cast in the hall. Mackenzie sat up as much as she could and tried to make out the features but it was useless. “Nick?” she whispered.

Almost instantly the figure came closer and closer until Mackenzie found herself engulfed in the familiarity of Nick. Tears streamed down her face as she fought for words to escape her lips and found that it wasn’t possible. Still, she continued holding on for dear life. “I love you Mackenzie Anne Roberts…don’t you ever forget that” Nick said.
