Background

Year 2000, a meteor hits the north pole and wipes out half of humanity… or was that what has really happened? In the year 2015 a new enemy faces the earth. Its name… Angels, sent by Devil more likely than God. These entities attack in different forms with different weapons and tactics and posses enormous amounts of strength. An organization is mobilized by the name of Nerv, in relation with JSDF, they have the authority to battle the angels with any means necessary… And the only means are the Evangalions, organic weapons that are as demonic as Angels themselves. And the only people capable of piloting them are the chosen children, 14 years of age. Enter Shinji Ikari, one such child, called by his abandoning father to Tokyo 3, the new Capitol of Japan. The one place all the angels are trying to reach.

Review

This anime was the first to get me into anime….. If you have not seen this anime series, you must be new to the whole anime thing. Basically it’s a story of 14 year old boy named Shinji who is put into a seat of a death machine and told to kill. You can imagine how many problems that already makes… Soon he is joined by other children of his age in a similar situation along with their inner problems and feelings. I would say there is romance and the main one is between Shinji and the two other female pilots …. Although it is never clear who is the one Shinji truly wants to be with, until maybe the end…. I’ll let you decide for your selves. This anime is also very psychological, it deals a lot with the human mind and also has many religious themes mixed together into it. The story starts out pretty light and even humorous at times but quickly becomes very depressing and heavy. I would recommend this to anyone looking for somewhat of a different giant robot show, with heavy character development and deep plot. The animation is clear and good although can be better, the sound is very good as well, with an kick ass opening theme and a lot of memorable music. The dubbing, I think, was excellent, with plenty of emotion and feeling.

Overall:
Overall: 10, this is would be a work of art even now, Evangalion still has a huge fan base….. On a side note, I hear of a new project that will use the new DVD technology to renew (not remake, just make cleaner and more polished) this anime series. This anime series contains two anime movies which will eventually also be reviewed by me.
