OK, so we
fast-forward to July of 2002. With Jamie's
help in the decorating department, we've chosen fabrics, decorations, and pulled
out a room full of things we've been hoarding for the last 2 years (some of
which were meant for the 27, but never made it there, due to the fast sale).
With a Victorian-like upholstery, and elegant accent pieces, the cabin of this
31' is really getting a makeover! |
|
The hand painted canister set, the chrome soap dispenser,
and many other pieces, really set off the rich mahogany that now fills this 31'.
It should be noted that previous owners had covered much of this wood with a
laminate, which was nicely done, but obviously done to minimize the work needed
to maintain a classic. |

In this photo, you can see the newly covered v-berth
cushions, and the accent pillows. New molding was needed for much of the v-berth
area, and so it was done during the big staining days. And yes, yours truly made
those curtains with his own two hands. I drug out the old sewing machine, and
fashioned new window dressings. Rods were found at Walmart, for a total of $3
per rod. Since the original rods were long gone, these served us well. |
There were
those moments...
This photo shows the the new upholstery (with its light
tone-on-tone). If you look closely, you can still see the upholsterer's chalk
marks (notice the "T" -- for TOP). The blinds were installed
by Jamie and I over the course of several days (can you say DIVORCE COURT?). If
you've never done this, prepare yourself. Hanging them is a breeze. Attaching
the hold-down brackets is yet another story. Jamie says they have to be even, so
we made them even, but not before some choice words were exchanged. |

Just like
home
There is no
stopping two folks committed to making their project stand out
from the norm. Jamie and I are no exception when it came to
the "look" of CONFERENCE's interior. The more we
did, the more we bought, and eventually had to make each other
simply STOP! There was so much we saw, and so much that
"would look great on the boat", but being a 31',
there's but so much decorating one can do. Little touches here
and there continue to happen, but for the most part,
CONFERENCE is decked out for pleasure cruising, and for great
weekends aboard.

That same
shelf, with the white laminate below it is re-worked, and
shown above. Why anyone would want to cover perfectly good
mahogany wood, I'll never know. I guess it's the maintenance.
And I can appreciate that, too. I just feel as though a little
elbow grease and time makes something like this worth doing. |
