A VERY BIG "THANK YOU" TO MY MOTHER. I picked her brain relentlessly to get all of the names, places, and memories that she had stored up for over 60 years. She is tired, so am I, and my phone bill is outrageous. I have typed for hours so I am sure you are going to find mistakes. If its grammar or spelling, overlook it, if it's names, places, or dates, email me and I will correct it. Hope you enjoy the reading and I hope it may help someone else who is searching at 2 am in the morning, or was I the only one who did this, hahahaha, Barb.
Here is a picture of where I grew up in the "hollers" of West Virginia. This is Carbondale, WV probably around 1950. The large building in the center was the company store where we bought our coke and candy with coal script and ask for it to be put in a "poke". In the background you can see the coke ovens and the coal tipple.
