Quake:
The Gathering




These are cards, in various states of completion, that I hand-made, years ago, for an unfinished Quake-themed Magic: The Gathering (MTG) deck. As you can see from looking at them, some of the card art hasn't been colored, and many of them aren't even cut out of the paper sheets I drew them on. Where casting cost, abilities, attack/defense, etc., are missing below, this is indicative of incomplete cards, not omitted data. You'll also notice that some of the cards went through different versions, gaining/losing different powers and attributes in the process. While I can't recall for certain, due to the amount of time that's passed, it does appear to me that these cards represent separate attempts on my part to make a Quake deck, not one cohesive project. Some of the cards are probably too powerful/cheap, although I did make more of an attempt to be fair than I did with the DOOM deck. The only version of Quake I had ever played at the time I made these was the Sega Saturn port, as such, with the resolution on a television being rather low, I had to use my imagination a bit on some of the finer details of the monster's features, so there are some little things off about them, design-wise. Also, Dank & Scuz only appear in the Saturn version, in case you don't recognize them (they're 'joke' Quake marine characters in a hidden, narrated comic strip).

As it was never completed, I didn't have the opportunity to try the deck out against real MTG decks, so I can't say how effective it'd be. Looking at the cards, I don't think it'd be all that great, but I imagine loading a deck with multiples of the better cards might do the trick. I did notice that I put a fair amount of emphasis on special lands this time around.

If anybody reading this wants to use any of the ideas presented here for their own home-made MTG decks, knock yourself out.
