A Major Change

In July 2017, at their 50th Anniversary conference in Rochester, NY, the Church & Synagogue Library Association voted to dissolve. It was a heart-breaking decision, but had become inevitable. For at least the past six years, membership has been dwindling, chapters disbanding, board positions going unfilled and finances diminishing. We could no longer see a path forward as a national organization with paid staff.

The Board of our local CSLA chapter met in August and decided to continue our organization under a new name: Houston Area Congregation Library Association (HACLA). Our bylaws state that we must have a membership vote in order to dissolve. We will take such a vote at our October 8th meeting. Please plan to attend to make your thoughts known as we chart our future at the local level.

Our History

Jane Hope receives recognition from CSLA President Marcia Trauernicht

The Houston Area Chapter (HAC) of the Church & Synagogue Library Association (CSLA) was recognized during the 2015 national convention for its 30th anniversary.

CSLC-HAC was organized on February 9, 1985 at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church. Our purpose was to band together church and synagogue librarians to share and promote librarianship within a 100-mile radius of Houston. Ruth Smith and Ruth Sawyer of the national organization presented the first program to 51 local librarians. By June of 1985, the constitution and bylaws of the new chapter were approved, and 64 librarians were recognized as charter members.

In July of 1993, our chapter hosted the 26th National Conference. The "CSLA Round-Up, Texas Style" was very successful. In 2010, we hosted the 43rd National Conference, with the theme "Hats Off to Congregational Libraries."

Our chapter has continued to be a source of inspiration to local librarians and to play a leading role in CSLA endeavors. We have several national award-winning librarians and libraries among our ranks. Check out our new page featuring libraries from our chapter!

We usually meet two times a year, and we encourage you to visit us at one of our meetings or contact us if you are interested in starting or growing a library in your congregation! Top
