Brady, Drozd & Rose Score San Antonio Victories

San Antonio Raceway - July 19th, 2014

The fifth event of the 2014 MalloryPrint.com Southwest Heritage Racing Association season was held July 19th at San Antonio Raceway. The SHRA along with the Outlaw Fuel Altered series headlined the action at the "Texas Nostalgia Thunder" event which also featured live music, vendors, swap meet, bracket racing and a cacklefest! The SHRA Nostalgia Eliminator classes were running for points in San Antonio and drivers were eager to get back on the drag strip after a several week summer break in the schedule.

Nostalgia Eliminator 1 Results:

In the 4.65 index Nostalgia Eliminator 1 category, Tera Wendland-Graves rolled into San Antonio leading the points with Wes Breiten and Chris Graves rounding out the top three. The SHRA welcomed Richard Brady's injected front engine dragster, Randy Mueller's blown altered and Andy Mears' blown 1957 Chevy Funny Car to their first event of the season in an impressive thirteen car field.

With two qualifying sessions completed, Tera Wendland-Graves scored her fourth pole position with a 4.70 at 149 mph pass which extended her lead in the Good Vibrations Motorsports NE 1 Shootout standings. Chris Stouffer's "Defiant" blown front engine dragster grabbed the number two spot with a 4.722 at 150 mph and Chris Graves' "Blown Inheritance" blown slingshot secured the number three spot with a 4.725 at 149 mph. Andy Mears "Dragon Slayer" Funny Car posted a 4.74 at 145 mph to qualify fourth and Randy Mueller rounded out the top five with a 4.76 at 139 as teams battled slick and hot track conditions.

In the first round of eliminations, Dale McKee got the action started as he soloed to the next round when Jimmy Scott failed to make the call with engine damage. Chris Graves narrowly defeated Steve Matthews with a 4.72 at 148 to Matthews' 4.79 at 145. Chris Stouffer also used a 4.72 to take out Steve Dunkin's close 4.75 at 145 mph as Dunkin's 4.75 won him the Hayden Enterprises "Closest to the Index Rd 1 Loser" bonus. Andy Mears posted a clean 4.73 at 146 to knock out Denton winner Brian Briggs' 4.84 at 142 mph. Randy Mueller moved into round two using a 4.76 at 145 mph to defeat Jason O'Neill's 4.96 at 137 and Tera Wendland-Graves advanced on a bye run with a 4.72 at 148 mph.

Round two kicked off with Tera Wendland-Graves taking on Randy Mueller. Wendland-Graves left first and never trailed clicking off a strong 4.66 at 150 mph to Mueller's 4.96 at 137 mph. Chris Graves and Dale McKee were up next as Graves used a quick pedal job to click off a 4.90 at 136 to hold off McKee's 5.29 at 116 mph. Richard Brady snuck past Andy Mears who fought for traction on the slippery racing surface as Brady's 4.85 at 141 mph advanced over Mears' lifting 5.46 at 90 mph. Chris Stouffer moved into the semi-finals on a bye run, posting a 4.84 at 138 mph.

Richard Brady and Chris Stouffer were the first pair out in the semi-final round in an injected vs. blown match up of front engine dragsters. Brady was off the line first with a slight advantage while Stouffer fought for traction. Brady clicked off a 4.81 at 140 mph to advance over Stouffer's pedaling 5.08 at 123 mph. Tera Wendland-Graves and Chris Graves squared off next in a husband vs. wife battle. Tera showed no mercy as her 4.68 at 146 mph took the nod while Graves was forced to lift, also fighting the slippery racing surface.

Richard Brady was set to take on the points leader Tera Wendland-Graves in the final of NE 1 as the cars did their burnouts and crew chiefs made their final adjustments. At the flash of amber, Brady was off the line first and he needed everything he could get as his 4.78 at 142 mph was just enough to hold off Tera's quicker 4.69 at 142 mph, as Brady took his first SHRA NE 1 victory by .005 at the stripe! Crew chief Al Mallory and the team were elated on the starting line as Brady became the fourth different winner in the class this season.

Nostalgia Eliminator 2 Results:

A slim field of three made up the 5.00 index Nostalgia Eliminator 2 class with a handful of regular attendees missing this event for various reasons. Bee Godwin entered San Antonio leading the points and looking strong in the fight to defend his 2013 class Championship with three wins on the season, but Tommy Drozd was hot on his heels and looking to close the gap.

After two qualifying sessions, Tommy Drozd led the pack with a 5.10 at 112 mph with Bee Godwin's 5.14 holding up for second qualifier. Bruce Bruno Jr. left before the tree on both of his qualifying runs and was inserted in the final qualifying spot heading into eliminations. With his pole, Tommy Drozd now ties Bee Godwin in the Meyer Enterprises NE 2 Shootout standings.

Bee Godwin and Bruce Bruno Jr. kicked off the first round and Bruno was still off his game on the line as his -.296 reaction time automatically advanced Bee Godwin to the final as Godwin's 5.15 at 132 mph advanced. Tommy Drozd soloed into the final with a 5.10 at 129 mph to meet points leader Godwin in the last dance.

In the NE 2 final round, Tommy Drozd was ready for his chance to take out Godwin as he took a tenth of a second advantage off the line and posted a 5.25 at 117 mph to defeat Godwin's quicker but loosing 5.20 at 128 mph. This marked Drozd's second NE 2 win of the season and closed some of the gap between him and Godwin, who still holds the points lead heading into the next event.

Nostalgia Eliminator 3 Results:

In the 5.50 index Nostalgia Eliminator 3 category, Dusty Rose entered San Antonio leading the points over defending class Champion Doug Morrison. Rose had a rough start to the race weekend as his truck was stolen from the hotel Friday night and Saturday morning the "Foggy Mountain Special" team was left without transportation as they left the hotel to head to the track. Rose and company handled the situation as best they could with law enforcement and instead of simply renting a truck and heading home, opted to still compete in San Antonio, a decision that would pay off for Rose by the night's end.

At the conclusion of two qualifying rounds, local racer Dustin Bradford who also raced with SHRA in Temple, led the field with a 5.51 at 123 mph in his roadster. Gary Mitchell qualified second with a 5.52 at 123 mph in the nine car field. Dusty Rose also posted a 5.52 to qualify third with Doug Morrison in fourth with a 5.54 at 123 mph. Ron Walden rounded out the top five with his 5.59 at 121 mph as the teams returned to the pits to prepare for eliminations. Dusty Rose held onto his lead in the AlkyDigger.com NE 3 Shootout standings by qualifying third.

In the opening round of eliminations, Carl Johnson and Gary Mitchell rolled to the stage beams in their altereds. Johnson took a big starting line advantage but his 5.64 at 118 mph came up just short as Mitchell was able to drive around with a 5.52 at 115 mph. Dusty Rose took on Robert Springstead as Rose' 5.61 at 110 mph was just enough to hold off Springstead's 5.66 at 117 mph at the stripe. Michael Anderson benefitted from an uncharacteristic red light from Doug Morrison, as Morrison's -.008 light ended his day earlier than expected, while Anderson cruised into round two with a 6.29. Ron Walden used a 5.57 at 121 mph to take out Neal Rogers' break out 5.48 at 128 mph and Dustin Bradford moved on in a bye run with a 5.93.

Dusty Rose and Ron Walden were out first with their front engine dragsters to start the second round of eliminations. Walden jumped the tree with a -.015 light while Rose clicked off a 5.49 at 120 mph to advance to the semi-finals. Dustin Bradford used a massive holeshot and a 5.66 at 114 mph to take out Michael Anderson's quicker but loosing 5.51 at 121 mph. Gary Mitchell soloed on the bye run to a 5.49 at 123 mph to also move into the semi-finals.

The NE 3 semi-finals got underway with Dusty Rose posting a 5.53 at 120 on a bye run into the finals, his fourth final of the season. Dustin Bradford and Gary Mitchell squared off to see who would take on Rose in the final. Bradford took the starting line advantage and need it, as his 5.61 at 122 was just enough to hold off Mitchell's quicker but loosing 5.53 at 123 mph.

Two young gun drivers were set to do battle in the NE 3 final round at San Antonio with Dusty Rose and Dustin Bradford ready to fire up. The cars did their burnouts and at the flash of amber Bradford again left first, but his 5.60 at 121 mph wasn't enough to hold off Rose' "perfect" 5.50 at 119 mph as Rose turned his weekend around with a big win in San Antonio and major extension on his points lead.
