Flashes win home opener in style
Twenty minutes before kickoff Dix
Stadium looked like it had the night before: empty. But those who came to
see Kent State in its home opener saw a team with fire in it’s belly.
The Golden Flashes won decisively over I-AA opponent, Bucknell, 38-17.
On Tuesday Dean Pees said that the
Bison might not know what they were getting into. Confident words coming
from a coach who has only won three games in three years, however, his
team backed up his prophecy with key takeaways and big plays on offense.
Kent State’s first play from
scrimmage sophomore, RB David Alston dashed 66 yards through the Bison
defense for a score. And from there Kent State didn’t look back and
burried the Bison by halftime.
After the game KSU’s quarterback
dilemma ended. True freshman Joshua Cribbs took over early in the second
quarter and remained in until the game was out of reach. Cribbs, who
showed his versatility through the air and on the ground, lead the offense
to 21 points.
He hooked up with Matt Curry and
Joshua Bostick for long scores but also lost large chunks of yards and a
TD because of dropped passes.
The Flashes defense took the ball away
from Bucknell in key situations. Nashville Dyer had two interceptions on
tipped balls and Justin Baughm ran a fumble back 89 yards for a score.
Coach Pees, who ripped on his defense
earlier in the week, had to be satisfied with the play making abilities of
his defense but mistakes and penalties were a weakness.
The
Flashes take on the Miami of Ohio Redhawks at 6pm at Dix Stadium this
Saturday. |
