1983
Phillip and Mindy, Beth and Rick were Springfield High's most popular couples. Phillip and Beth were voted prom king and queen, and as they danced, Phillip became more and more enamored with Beth. A jealous Mindy tried to keep Beth away from her man, but to no avail. Rick confronted his friend and Phillip left the party to drown his sorrows in the parking lot. At midnight, Beth quickly left the prom before her wicked stepfather Bradley found out where she'd been. Phillip spotted Beth as she changed clothes in the parking lot and gave her a kiss to remember him. Bradley confronted Beth and vowed she'd never set eyes on Rick or Phillip again.
1983
Springfield newcomer Mindy Lewis fell for Phillip Spaulding, but Phillip was more interested in the quiet and shy Beth Raines. Beth's stepfather, Bradley Raines, was a vicious man. When he discovered Phillip was actually Justin Marler's son, he cruelly broke the news to the young man. When Alan Spaulding admitted Phillip had been adopted, Phillip turned to Beth for love and support. Bradley was jealous of their relationship, and took his anger out on Beth by raping her. Ashamed and traumatized, Beth cut off all ties with Phillip, leaving him confused and hurt--and sending him into the waiting arms of Mindy.
1984
Darcy, the gravelly-voiced ex-girlfriend of Lujack, had a hard time accepting that Lujack was in love with Beth. After all, he was a member of the Galahads gang and shouldn't be hanging around with Springfield society girls. When Lujack decided to quit the gang and go straight, Darcy lost it. She held Beth, Lujack and Alex hostage at Cedar's Hospital, and shot some hospital staff members. Lujack tried to reason with her, recalling the good times they'd had together. Finally, he got to her and she fell in his arms, sobbing. Lujack then gently too the gun from her hand. Darcy was later committed to a mental hospital.
1984
Phillip's relationship with Beth fell apart because of her friendship with Lujack. Phillips decided to break up Beth and Lujack by sabotaging Lujack's nightclub. When it went off, Beth was injured. She recovered, but was left blind. India von Halkein, Alexandra's step-daughter, learned of Phillip's involvement in the bombing and blackmailed him. Either he marry her, or she'd tell everyone--esppecially Beth--what he'd done. Phillip gave in and wed the social-climbing India.
